By Home Furnishings Business in Bedding on March 1, 2011

Specialty sleep vendor Glideaway Sleep Products will open a new showroom in the International Home Furnishings Center at High Point Furniture Market, April 2-7.

The space, IHFC M-410, is located in a high-traffic bedding area and will provide the company with more visibility.

"Glideaway's sales and retail presence is growing, and we recognize that High Point is an especially important show for our Central and East Coast customers," said Ron Fredman, executive vice president of sales for Glideaway, St. Louis. "Our new space has a hallway of windows which will enhance our visibility and is located right next to the Specialty Sleep Association showroom. The decision to move came from wanting to be more accessible to our customers."

In an effort to make the navigation of Market easier for attendees, the organizers of High Point Market have dedicated space on the IHFC's fourth and fifth floors second-tier bedding manufacturers.

"Smart retailers and buyers need to maximize their time while at market," Fredman said. "The new showroom also accommodates our expanded mattress, steel and accessory product lines in a more fluid, open layout presentation."

At High Point Glideaway will introduce the Hotelier, a heavy duty all-steel bed frame that adjusts to fit full, queen, king and California-king size bedding; the Space Saver bed frame, which offers a full 14 inches of under-the-bed storage space from floor to frame; and two metal youth beds designed for use with the popular and colorful sleepharmony Jubilee mattress.

HPU to Host Internet Marketing Symposium

By Home Furnishings Business in Internet on March 1, 2011

High Point University's International School of Home Furnishings & Design will sponsor an Internet marketing symposium during High Point Furniture Market on April 7.

The event will take place 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on April 7 in the Francis Auditorium in the Phillips School of Business.

Brian Thornfelt, general merchandise manager for e-commerce giant CSN Stores, will serve as keynote speaker for the symposium.

Lisa Foote, president of Minneapolis-based MixMobi.com, will present an overview of mobile marketing, along with typical costs and benefits. She'll share mobile marketing techniques that manufacturers and retailers can start trying immediately.

Leslie Carothers, president of The Kaleidoscope Partnership, will explain how manufacturers and retailers can work cost efficiently with national and local interior designers and design bloggers to drive traffic to websites and into local retail stores.

A four-member panel of industry professionals including two retailers and two manufacturers will present real-world case studies of how they are using social media marketing to build their businesses.

The symposium is designed to help companies engage their customers, create brand loyalty and drive sales, said Dr. Richard Bennington, the Paul Broyhill Professor of Home Furnishings at HPU.

"Our hope is that this seminar will help attendees gain a competitive edge by discovering ideas, best practices and emerging trends in online advertising, optimization and social media," Bennington said. "Bringing these experts from around the country will allow HPU students to get a behind the scenes look at techniques being used by businesses today. A great benefit it is for them to learn how some of the tools they are already using, like Facebook and blogging, can be used to drive customers to websites and into stores."

Stanford Furniture, Interior Designer Join for Collection

By Home Furnishings Business in licensing on March 1, 2011 Interior designer Julie Browning Bova has created first branded collection of home furnishings for Stanford Furniture.

Debuting at the High Point Furniture Market in April in the Stanford Furniture showroom located at 435 North Wrenn Street, the collection features 37 pieces of bedroom, dining, and upholstered furnishings. The Julie Browning Bova Home collection mixes classic and modern aesthetics while combining the unique features of antiques with modern fabrics, finishes, and detailing to create pieces with wit, whimsy, and style.

€œMy new collection is classic, modern, bold, feminine, elegant, surprising, and timeless,€ Bova said. €œIt is inspired by favorite €˜collected treasures€™ that I have acquired from my family, found in antique stores and in my travels. These pieces made a lasting impression on me and created an €˜I have to have IT moment.€™ My furniture collection comes with a designer€™s promise of great thought€”thought of function, design, and placement in different types and styles of homes, incorporating subtle details to keep them fresh, timeless and transitional.€

Bova has been an interior design professional for more than 20 years.  Located in Indianapolis, Indiana, her company has worked with commercial and residential clients from Michigan to Florida, offering design expertise to a range of projects, from luxury homes to metropolitan landmarks.

Bova's collection is the third designer-licensed group for Stanford Furniture, a producer of dining, occasional and custom upholstery. Bova will be at the market and will greet Stanford's retail partners at a Saturday, April 2, reception.

Six vignettes will showcase a range of occasional and upholstered pieces, including sofas, chairs, ottomans, and a daybed.  While some selections conjure classic images of old Hollywood, others add a modern splash of color, like a classic Italian chair refinished with crisp cotton in bright orange.

€œThis collection abounds with the inimitable energy and passion of the designer and has something to offer everyone,€ said Randy Short, president of Stanford Furniture. €œJulie€™s vision encompasses a myriad of styles and its eclectic nature is a perfect fit for our diverse design clientele.€

€œEvery room should tell a story and reflect the owner€™s passion,€ Bova continued. €œIt should not be too decorated, but look warm, layered and collected. My new collection is sensitive to that and places particular emphasis on pieces that are functional, elegant and special€”treasures you would be proud to add to your home.€

DOC Initiates 2010 Bedroom Furniture Review

By Home Furnishings Business in Bedroom on February 28, 2011

The U.S. Department of Commerce has initiated an administrative review of wooden bedroom furniture shipments from China in 2010.

The process is part of a 2005 antidumping order that imposed duties on Chinese-made bedroom furniture. The original order dictated annual reviews for five years. In December, the International Trade Commission ruled that duties should remain in place on subject merchandise after a "sunset review" of the antidumping order, clearing the way for DOC to initiate another review this year shipments during 2010.

The 2010 review will examine 180-plus Chinese manufacturers of wood bedroom furniture. Click here and scroll down for a complete list of these manufacturers, all of which had qualified for a separate duty rate lower than the prohibitive China-wide duty in the most recent segment of antidumping proceedings in which they participated.
