Kroger Continues March into Furniture

Boyles Furniture Liquidating

By Home Furnishings Business in on January 3, 2011 Furniture retailer Boyles Furniture and Rugs is going out of business.

The 61-year-old company has hired a promotion specialist to run the going-out-of-business sale at its two stores in Pineville, N.C., and High Point. The liquidation sale begins Thursday.

The retailer closed its stores over the holidays to get ready for the sale with Great American Furniture Services.

€œBoyles has been an institution for over 60 years in the community, and we are pleased to have been selected to assist with the closing promotion,€ said Susan Bankston, vice president of marketing for Great American Furniture Services. €œThis sale is going to allow a once in a lifetime opportunity for consumers up and down the East Coast. Boyles was always known for better quality, high-end furniture and one of kind oriental and Persian rugs. Now everyone can afford furniture and rugs at the going out of business sale at Boyles.€

At one time, Boyles has annual sales of just over $270 million in 34 locations. Boyles is owned by Hendricks Furniture Group in Conover, N.C., which filed Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in June 2009. The retailer emerged from the filing in Jan. 2010.

Easy Life Furniture Takes over Former Wickes Location

Easy Life Furniture has moved its Cerritos, Calif., store into a former Wickes Furniture location, the Orange County Register reported last week.

Buena Park, Calif.-based Easy Life, which has 19 stores, wants to open other Orange County locations, according to the report.

At 30,000 square feet, the new location is twice the size of the old location in the same shopping center.

"Even though it's in the same shopping center, the foot traffic has dramatically increased due to location/exposure," Marketing Manager Nancy Hsieh told the paper. "We are always looking for good real estate opportunities if they present themselves. We are looking to fill two voids in the O.C., one in south O.C. (RSM area) and Anaheim."

John Boyd Designs Returns

John Boyd Designs International will open a showroom for the winter Las Vegas Furniture Market, Jan. 24-28.

The Scottsdale, Ariz.-based division of Kinfine USA, will occupy A 3,500-square-foot in space 800 of World Market Center's Building A. This will mark the first showing of John Boyd products since John Boyd Designs was forcibly closed in an eminent domain action by the Los Angeles School District in April 2009.

John Boyd Designs International will reintroduce its best-selling Notting Hill group, as well the new Outer Banks group along with correlating metal beds featuring under bed storage.

"You don€™t get a new lease on life that often and we are very grateful to Len Gao, CEO of Kinfine, and his entire team in having faith in John and his abilities, in designing, selling and concept marketing successful products in this industry for over thirty five years," said Vice President of Sales and Marketing Tom Carscaden.

Modani Modern Sets Official L.A.-Area Opening

Contemporary furniture retailer Modani Modern Furniture is set to cut the ribbon on a Sunset Boulevard furniture store in West Hollywood, Calif.

Since an earlier soft opening, the store has attracted celebrities including supermodel Kimora Lee Simmons who, with her daughter Aoki Lee, hosted a fashion show for girls at Make-A-Wish Foundation inside the new showroom.

From one small showroom and website, Modani Furniture has landed high-end clients such as the Trump Towers and others.

"We are so excited about the launch of the Los Angeles location and look forward to celebrating in style come the New Year," said Yonel Fellous, co-owner. "This is only the beginning of a year of growth as Modani continues to expand."

Modani launched a Miami showroom in 2007 before expanding to New York and Los Angeles, with new stores planned for Chicago, Houston and other major cities.
