By Aggregated Content in Furniture Retailing on May 9, 2013 from http://www.theartnewspaper.com/articles/Retail+giant+moves+into+art+business/29535

Restoration Hardware is entering the art business. The home furnishings company, which has more than 80 stores across the U.S., will launch a division in September devoted to commissioning, exhibiting and selling contemporary art.

The firm has already made its first purchase: Rain Room, 2012, by the British collective Random International. The installation, which uses motion sensors to enable visitors to walk through a downpour without getting wet, is on loan to New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), where it opens to the public on Sunday as part of the show "Expo 1:€ˆNew York".

ISPA: Mattress Wholesale Revenue up 8.7% in 2012

By Home Furnishings Business in Mattresses on May 9, 2013

Wholesale mattress revenue rose 8.7 percent in 2012, according to the International Sleep Products Association.

That figure, which represented a $6.8 billion increase, is from the trade association's 2012 Mattress Industry Report of Sales and Trends, released yesterday.

Along with the wholesale revenue increase, ISPA said mattress unit shipments rose to nearly 35.5 million last year, up 3.6 percent from 2011.

To help put these figures into perspective, the report separately displays data for inner-spring and non-innerspring mattresses and foundations, and includes unit, wholesale revenue and average unit price data for the last 20 years.

The report also contains information on U.S. mattress sales by region, contract sales, product size data, as well as price point trends, import/export figures and general econometric data that influence mattress sales. In addition to U.S. market data, the report includes global mattress industry information prepared by the Centre of Industrial Studies; and provides commentary by industry veterans Jerry Epperson and Bill Creekmuir.

ISPA members receive the annual report and the association€™s other statistical products (the monthly ISPA Bedding Barometer and its bi-annual market forecast) free of charge. This year, ISPA also has made the report and other statistical products available for purchase by the mattress retail community.

€œBeyond the mattress manufacturers and component suppliers that belong to ISPA, our statistical products are also relevant to mattress retailers,€ said ISPA President Ryan Trainer. €œThe 2012 Mattress Industry Report of Sales and Trends contains current and historical information that retailers can use as they manage their businesses and respond to industry trends.€

For more information about the 2012 Mattress Industry Report of Sales and Trends or other ISPA statistical products, contact Jane Oseth, 703-683-8371, ext. 1201.

Bob's Discount to Hold NYC Grand Openings

By Home Furnishings Business in Store Openings on May 9, 2013

Bob€™s Discount Furniture will celebrate grand openings May 23 at two stores in New York City by donating $27,000 to local schools and youth programs.

The new stores in Brooklyn and the Bronx, the fourth and fifth New York City Bob€™s locations, are expected to add more than 130 jobs to the local economy.

Christian Toerres will manage Bob€™s new 25,114-square-foot Brooklyn store at 2520 Flatbush Ave. John Grimaldiwill manage the company€™s new 29,430-square-foot Co-op City store in the Bronx at 2146 Bartow Ave., in the Bay Plaza Shopping Center.

Grand opening celebrations for both stores will start at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, with local dignitaries on hand and complimentary refreshments served from the stores€™ cafes. Company President and co-founder Bob Kaufman will attend the Brooklyn store ribbon cutting. Cathy Poulin, the company€™s public relations director, will participate in the ribbon cutting at the Bronx store.

€œWe€™re thrilled to be expanding our presence in the New York City area,€ said Kaufman. €œWe€™ve been embraced by every community that we€™ve entered here, and we€™re looking forward to introducing Brooklyn and Co-op City to our great values on quality furniture €“ with no gimmicks and the same low prices everyday.€

The company already operates three other New York City locations, in Queens and Manhattan. With the two new locations, Bob€™s Discount Furniture now has 47 stores in nine states (Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Virginia).

To show its commitment to the new stores€™ communities, Bob€™s Outreach program will present checks totaling $27,000 to 16 local schools and two youth-focused charities during the grand openings. These funds are made possible by customer donations to collection jars located in the cafes found in every Bob€™s store, which offer free refreshments (including gourmet coffee and cookies) to all Bob€™s shoppers.

Two schools selected by their respective borough presidents, Brooklyn€™s PS 277-Gerritsen Beach Elementary School and the Bronx€™s PS 153-The Helen Keller School, will each receive $5,000 checks to support their education and arts programs. In addition, Bob€™s Random Acts of Kindness Program will present a $1,500 check to the East New York Urban Youth Corps at the Brooklyn store opening, and another to the Berkshire Farm Center & Services for Youth at the Bronx store opening.

Bob€™s Outreach will also present $1,000 checks to seven Brooklyn schools and seven Bronx School.

Every month as part of its Outreach program, Bob€™s Discount Furniture randomly selects seven schools in the communities near its stores and makes a donation of $1,000 to each one. This month, the company is doubling its usual contributions by providing funds for school education and arts programs in both Brooklyn and the Bronx. Bob€™s has donated money to hundreds of schools over the past 20 years. Previous recipients have used the donations for such things as purchasing new art and classroom supplies, funding student activity groups and going on field trips.
