International Bedding Shuffles Operations Management

By Home Furnishings Business in Bedding on November 16, 2010 Bedding supplier International Bedding has reorganized and expanded its operations group with several new appointments and promotions.

€œWe€™re preparing for the future by broadening our capabilities on the operations side, while at the same time focusing our staff on more specific functions and opportunities,€ said Dan Hige, president and COO.

IB has promoted Bruce Miller from vice president of logistics and continuous improvement€”the job he has held since 2008€”to the newly created position of vice president of strategic implementation. In his new post, Miller oversees domestic and international initiatives for the company that involve logisitics, supply and continuous improvement. He reports to Hige.

With new responsibility for the day-to-day operations of IB€™s five production facilities, Ed Wolff has been promoted to vice president of manufacturing. He also reports to Hige. Along with managing IB€™s factories, Wolff will team with sales and operations on product development projects. He joined IB in 2007 as operations manager of the company€™s largest factory in Pennsylvania.

Succeeding Wolff in his former position is IB€™s Steve Boucher, who was promoted from plant manager to operations manager at the Pennsylvania facility. Both Miller and Wolff assume Hige€™s former responsibilities as vice president of manufacturing, as well as the expanded functions in their respective posts.

In another executive appointment, IB has named Andy Cuppia to the newly created position of vice president of product development and operations, reporting to Wolff.

Cuppia, who holds certifications in lean manufacturing, will oversee operations at IB€™s Arizona factory, in addition to heading up the company€™s product development function. Prior to joining IB, Cuppia held corporate vice president of operations positions during the years 1998 to 2006 at Simmons, Serta and Spring Air Co. Most recently he was vice president of Global Supply Chain Partners, a Georgia-based consultancy.

Reporting to Cuppia is Jonathan Munoz, who has been promoted from assistant plant manager to plant manager of the company€™s Arizona facility. Munoz joined IB in 2006.

€œWe€™re very excited about the promotions and new positions in our operations group,€ Hige said.  €œThese changes strengthen the entire team, leverage the skills and talents of each individual, and enable us to move forward more quickly with our strategic plans.€

Lacks Valley Stores: "Doing Fine"

By Home Furnishings Business in Furniture Retailing on November 16, 2010

Texas furniture retailer Lacks Valley Stores received a flood of calls and e-mails this week after Lacks Home Furnishings announced it would close 36 Texas stores.

Lacks Valley Stores, McAllen, Texas, a family-owned furniture operation with ten stores throughout the Lower Rio Grande Valley and Laredo, has been forced to respond to countless inquiries from customers and suppliers following Victoria, Texas-based Lacks Home Furnishings' announcement. As a result, the management team at Lacks Valley Stores is stressing to customers and vendors its business is healthy and strong; and Lacks Valley Stores has no business ties to Lack's Stores, Inc. of Victoria, Texas.

"We're celebrating 75 years in South Texas," says Lacks Valley Stores' CEO Lee Aaronson. "Thousands of families have shopped in our stores."

Its stores are located on the Texas border from Laredo to Port Isabel, including locations in Brownsville, Harlingen, Edinburgh, Pharr, McAllen, Mission and Rio Grande City; and the 140,000-square-foot Lacks Valley Store in McAllen.
