Furniture Buying Index Climbs 2 Points to 72

By Home Furnishings Business in economic news on November 10, 2010 The Furniture Buying Index inched up two points this month to a reading of 72 to match the highest level the index has experienced in three years€”November 2007, according to Charleston, S.C.-based America's Research Group.

€œConsumers are still dealing with worries about the economic condition of the country and are still concerned about their personal spending,€ said Britt Beemer, chairman of America's Research Group. €œBut, they were looking forward to the Nov.2 election and the promises for change it held. With the Republican victories across the United States, consumers are more positive about government leadership and about the economy in general."

The Furniture Buying Index is compiled each month by ARG from interviews with between 5,000 and 8,000 consumers across the country. In a typical month, 80 percent of the consumers interviewed can name a specific furniture item they intend to buy. The Index's mark signifies what percent of the benchmark 80 percent actually have a particular item in mind.

Zenith Opens San Antonio Hub

By Home Furnishings Business in Delivery on November 10, 2010

Home furnishings supply chain specialist Zenith Global Logistics has opened another regional freight hub, this time in San Antonio, Texas.

The new facility is dedicated to servicing Zenith's expanding home delivery business as well as increased demand for its split-container program.

"Growing home delivery needs of our customers in the Texas area was a key factor in establishing our latest hub there," explains Jack Hawn, president and CEO of Conover, N.C.-based Zenith. "We're also seeing retailers continuing to place orders cautiously and strategically via our split container program. Installing a hub in Texas ensures that the order flexibility retailers expect from a split container will be matched by exceptional speed to market--another critical requirement for businesses to succeed, especially in a challenging marketplace."

The San Antonio hub is Zenith Global's fourth domestic expansion since 2009 and its second home delivery/split container-dedicated facility in the past year. In June Zenith Global opened a home delivery/split container hub in Atlanta, six months after cutting the ribbon on a new regional freight hub in Tupelo, Miss. Last fall, the company also established a 204,000-square-foot, multi-tenant warehousing and distribution center in Claremont, N.C. Future network expansions include facilities in Seattle, Chicago, Orlando, Elizabethtown, N.J., and Raleigh, N.C.

Zenith Global Logistics is an international supply chain provider specializing in home furnishings, providing comprehensive services from sourcing and shipping through warehousing, transportation and home delivery. Zenith currently operates more than 4.5 million square feet of warehouse domestically, including facilities in California, Texas, North Carolina and Virginia.

Family Gets Mortgage Paid for a Year

By Home Furnishings Business in Furniture Retailing on November 10, 2010

Winning the National Home Furnishings Month Mortage Sweepstakes will help a family transplanted to Texas for three years keep their Louisiana home until they return.

Nancy Tassin won the grand prize in the National Home Furnishings Month sweepstakes--a year's worth of mortgage payments--sponsored by World Market Center Las Vegas. She was randomly selected from 106,192 entries in the sweepstakes, which ran Sept. 1-30.

When her husband, Bill Tassin, was transferred to Austin, Texas, from Lafayette, La., he and his family knew they would return to their hometown in three years. While they did not want to sell their Pelican State dream home, the family wondered how they would keep up mortgage payments while living out of state.

"Times have been tough for us and winning the sweepstakes will definitely help alleviate some of our financial pressures," Nancy Tassin said. "My family moved to Austin when my husband was transferred for work to help with the aftermath of Hurricane Ike and it has been a difficult transition. We have three daughters, one of whom is a senior in high school who had to leave childhood friends behind and I have not been able to find a job."

In addition to entering the sweepstakes online, participants had the opportunity to enter through more than 700 participating retailers nationwide, which included 178 Ashley Home Stores. Austin-based retailer, Gage Furniture Co. Inc. was an active retailer in this year's campaign with the highest amount of consumers entering the sweepstakes through their store's on-line page.

"We would like to extend our congratulations to Nancy and her family as we are incredibly excited to be able to offer a year's worth of mortgage payments," said World Market Center President and Chief Executive Officer Robert Maricich. "We hope this prize will give her the financial freedom to pursue the dreams she has always had for her home."

Also as part of the "Is It Home Yet" National Home Furnishings Month campaign, Facebook fans had the opportunity to win prizes by sharing their stories about their personal home design projects. Three winners were chosen based on their story and won a digital picture frame courtesy of World Market Center Las Vegas.
