Authorities combed the wreckage of the Direct Furniture Outlet in Summerdale, Ala., trying to confirm the cause of the fire that destroyed the building and shut down traffic on Ala. 59 for several hours.
No one was injured in the fire that started around 3 a.m. Monday.

A Bloomington, Ill., family business is accusing the city of giving a competitor an unfair advantage. Aldermen are voting Monday night on a proposed sales tax incentive for a new Ashley Furniture Store at Colonial Plaza. Just five months after opening a showroom in Whitefish Bay, Honquest Furniture owner Richard Honquest has decided to retire from a 52-year career in the furniture business and close his stores in Whitefish Bay, Ill., and Chicagoland, Ill.
The Whitefish Bay stores entire $1 million inventory of furniture, rugs and accessories will be discounted at a retirement and store closing sale designed to clear the showroom.

Fire crews were called to the Furniture For Less store at 13th & Deer Park Boulevard in South Omaha, Neb., shortly before six Sunday morning. They found heavy smoke pouring from the windows of the building.
