High Point Market Budget Could Get Trimmed

By Home Furnishings Business in High Point on May 2008 North Carolina’s budget planners are considering slight cuts to state funding of the High Point Furniture Market, according to a report in Friday’s News & Record (Greensboro, N.C.).

Budget writers are trimming across the board to accommodate priority items such as mental health and transportation.

The proposal would trim marketing for the event by 1 percent from $875,000, instead of expanding that figure by $2.6 million, according to the report.

Julian Lighting Honored by Met Home

For the June issue, the MH editors honor distinctive architecture, interior décor, home furnishings and gadgets.

The award-winning pendant is a reductivist take on one of the Julians’ favorite textile patterns, and made in hand-cut brass with a rich bronze finish. The white linen drum shade provides texture to an otherwise sleek silhouette.

The Julians also have a furniture license with Vaughan-Bassett that debuted during the April High Point Market.

Sami Hayek Debuts Home Furnishings, Accessories Collection at Target

Designed with the student in mind, the contemporary collection features products from comforters and sheets to photo frames and notebooks in bold colors and designs.

Hayek established Sami Hayek Studio in 2003. Known for blending styles, materials and scales, Hayek’s native Mexico has always been a strong influence and is evident throughout his collection for Target.

“For me, design is about translating objects into stories and experiences,” Hayek said in a release announcing the collection with Target. “My new collection for Target reflects my core design beliefs, which include structure, humor and a commitment to sustainable design.”

Bedding includes comforters, sheets, pillows and quilts of bright pinks, grays and chocolate browns paired with different patterns and textures that can easily be mixed and matched. Decorative accessories include photo frames, wall art, lamps, media storage and even a piggy bank. Hayek’s furniture collection includes a desk, desk chair, file cabinet and bookshelf. Stationery items such as magazine holders, notebooks and letter trays round out the collection.

“The Sami Hayek for Target collection arrives just in time for back to college, and provides our guests with vibrant decor and furnishing options that add a hint of surprise,” said Gina Sprenger, senior vice president of merchandising, Target. “Anyone who values function and practicality housed in great design will gravitate toward Hayek’s product.”

Target has 1,613 stores in 47 states nationwide.

FBI Taps Shelley Peters to Lead Licensing

By Home Furnishings Business in on May 2008 Furniture Brands International (FBI), St. Louis, announced Wednesday that Shelley Peters has been named director of licensing. Peters, who previously led brand licensing operations at FBI division Thomasville, will expand the Thomasville approach to branding to other FBI companies.

Under Peters’ direction, Thomasville expanded beyond furniture into residential flooring, lighting and kitchen cabinets. Now she will coordinate licensing opportunities for Broyhill, Drexel Heritage, Henredon and Lane, as well as Thomasville.

“We have some of the best-known and -respected brands in the home furnishings industry, and they form the perfect cornerstone for a national licensing strategy,” said FBI Chairman and CEO Ralph Scozzafava in an announcement. “A robust licensing program will focus on leveraging the power of our market-leading brands into new and adjacent home furnishings categories. This increases consumer awareness for our core furniture offerings and creates an additional income stream that provides a tangible return on our brand equity.”

Howard Elliott, Benetti’s Expand at World Market Center

By Home Furnishings Business in Accessories on May 2008 Mirror and accessories vendor Howard Elliott Collection, Chicago; and Benetti’s Italia, a Rancho Dominguez, Calif.-based furniture vendor are expanding their presence at the Las Vegas Market for the upcoming July show.

Howard Elliott Collection is doubling the size of its showroom on the third floor of World Market Center’s Building A, Suites 332 and 334 in Building A of The World Market Center in Las Vegas.

Benetti’s Italia will move from the Building A to a new expanded showroom on the 12th floor of the new Building C, space C-1289. The expanded showroom will allow Benetti’s Italia optimal room to debut its three new groups of exposed-wood, modular sofa seating and sectional systems.
