MacFrugal's Shows Its Christmas Spirit

MacFrugal's Furniture in St. Catherine's, Ontario, handed out fixings for Christmas dinner to around a hundred people Saturday morning, the St. Catherine's Standard reported Sunday.

Store Owner Gary Clemmensen and his staff have given away food hampers with a Christmas ham, potatoes and vegetables to those in need for the past 13 years. He recognized some of the faces in the line.

"We've been doing this a long time and we have a lot of people counting on it," he said in the report.

MacFrugal's stores in Welland and Hamilton also handed out Christmas dinner food hampers.

Hooker Promotes Huckfeldt to Corporate Controller

Huckfeldt has more than 30 years of experience in accounting, ranging from privately held concerns to large, global, publicly traded companies. Huckfeldt joined Hooker in April 2004 and led the company€™s Sarbanes-Oxley implementation and subsequent compliance efforts through February 2006. He was promoted to manager of operations accounting in March 2006 and has managed Hooker's corporate accounting functions during his tenure in that role.

WHFA Conference Gets Disney Magic

The Western Home Furnishings Association, Roseville, Calif., will hold its 2010 Conference & Expo May 2-4 at Disney's Grand Californian Resort & Spain Anaheim, Calif. Talon Systems Opening N.C. Furniture Plant

By Home Furnishings Business in on December 18, 2009 Talon Systems, a Canadian manufacturer of storage cabinets, dressers, shelves, computer desks, television stands and partitions will open a plant in Statesville, N.C., that will employ 90 people over the next three years.

Governor Bev Perdue announced the move Thursday. Talon will invest $5.9 million in the project, which received a $46,590 grant from One North Carolina Fund.

"This is the latest example of North Carolina's ability to attract international companies looking for the perfect U.S. location to invest and grow," Perdue said. €œI will continue to foster a business climate that helps new companies locate here and existing companies expand.€

Talon Systems is a 50-year-old, privately owned Canadian manufacturer of ready-to-assemble furniture and organizational units. Based in Ontario, the company currently employs more than 150 workers and makes veneer storage cabinets, dressers, shelves, computer desks, TV stands, partitions and many other products. Talon products are sold in Costco, Lowes, Ikea, Home Depot, Sears and other retail outlets in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Others who assisted with this project include: the N.C. Department of Commerce, N.C. Community Colleges, N.C. Rural Economic Development Center, Iredell County and the City of Statesville.

Rowe Donates to Habitat for Humanity

Rowe Fine Furniture, Elliston, Va., has donated $150,000 in furniture to he Habitat for Humanity store in Roanoke, Va., WDBJ-TV reported Thursday.

"We've been in the community for over 50 years," said Rowe CEO Stephanie Lucas in the report. "And we wanted to do something that was very related to our industry, and our whole mission is about making people's lives comfortable."

The Habitat for Humanity Re-Store will sell the furniture at large discounts and use the money to build more homes.
