Century Furniture President and CEO Eric Schenk will retire April 1 after a 40-year career with the Hickory, N.C.-based high-end furniture vendor.
Alex Shuford III, currently vice president of sales & marketing, will take over as president. In addition, CV Industries Inc., the parent company of Valdese Weavers and Century Furniture, announced that Century Furniture will be acquired by the family of Alex Shuford II, a part of the broader Shuford family that has owned and operated Valdese Weavers and Century for more than 70 years. It is expected that the transaction will be completed later this spring. CV Industries will continue to wholly-own Valdese Weavers and various real estate interests.
My family and I are very optimistic about the future of the furniture industry and Centurys role in helping to shape that future, said Alex Shuford II, former president and CEO of Century and currently vice chairman of CV Industries. Members of his family who are currently active in the management of Century Furniture include son Alex Shuford III; daughter Comer Shuford Wear, senior director of advertising and marketing; son-in-law Brandon Hucks, chief financial officer; and son-in-law Evan Bledsoe, financial analyst.
I am pleased that Century is remaining a family-owned business and that it will be operated by the family members who own it, including my brother Alex and his family, said Harley F. Buck Shuford Jr., chairman of CV Industries and longtime president and CEO of Century. CV will focus its energy and resources on supporting the further development of the Valdese Weavers business.
Schenk started with Century Furniture in June 1973, after graduating from Lenoir Rhyne College. He moved quickly through the organization, holding key positions in most of the companys operations, including human resources manager, industrial engineer, plant manager and vice president of manufacturing. In 2000, Schenk was named chief operating officer, a position he held until being named president and CEO in May 2010.
After 40 years of service at Century, I am looking forward to a more relaxed lifestyle," Schenk said. "I am proud of what the company has accomplished over the course of my career, and I will always be proud to be associated with the Century family. Alex will be an effective president for Century having led our sales and marketing efforts for several years and our upholstery operations before that. I wish him well in his new role, and am confident of Centurys future success."
CV, Century and the Shuford family are extremely grateful for Erics many contributions at Century throughout his career," said Buck Shuford. "He has been a tremendous leader at all levels of the company for over 40 years.
We will certainly miss Eric at Century," said incoming President Alex Shuford II. "It is rare today to have a legacy with one company that includes the accomplishments that he has had. We wish him all the best in his retirement.
Alex Shuford III, has worked for Century since September 2001. Prior to that he owned and operated his own company in San Francisco.
I am honored to be given the opportunity to lead such a wonderful team," he said. "Eric Schenk has positioned the company for strength and success, and I look forward to building on that foundation.

High-end case goods vendor Taracea is tripling the size of its High Point Furniture Market show space in the historic Radio Building.
After completing extensive restoration of the buildings 5,000 square-foot, first floor last fall, which included a massive art installation, Taracea presented a limited number of its products in the new space during the October trade show. Since then, the company has added the buildings lower level and second floor, for a total of 15,000 square feet.
The newly occupied second floor will be segmented to display furniture products from the companys collections in the traditional, transitional and contemporary categories, as well as original artwork by Taracea founder Javier Suárez and large scale art from artist Maria Teresa Suárez. A collection of nature inspired prints from Natural Curiosities by Christopher Wilcox also will be featured.
At the mezzanine level, Taracea will exhibit some of its more innovative designs on hand-painted floors, with walls covered in reclaimed wood from the manufacturers own forests. The buildings basement is being converted into a gallery for Taracea's Selva Maya collection of products, which includes one-of-a-kind items such as a table crafted from a 16-foot wood slab and oversized wood sculptures.
Work is under way now to create a cohesive presentation of Taracea furnishings among the three contiguous floors. The Mexico-based, vertically integrated company is known for its handcrafted wood furniture, including an authentically reproduced line for the impressive mid-19th century Hearst Castle, a National Historical Landmark mansion located on the Central Coast of California. Taraceas customized furniture capabilities make it a popular resource among interior designers and architectural specifiers.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony and presentation is planned for the expanded showroom on Sat., April 20, at 2 p.m., with a reception to follow.

Outdoor furniture showrooms at Chicago's Merchandise Mart will present Spring Fling, a day-long event on Thursday, March 14.
Twenty-five outdoor furnishings showrooms will be host open houses and special events for Chicagos design trade professionals at the Design Center at The Merchandise Mart throughout the day, in addition to a feature presentation by industry expert Traditional Home Magazine Senior Architecture Editor Amy Elbert. Attendees will be among the first to see the newly dedicated outdoor/casual industry within the Design Center located on the 15th and 16th floors.
Elbert's presentation, Pushing the Boundaries: Trends in Outdoor Living from Basic to Luxe, is set for 10-11 a.m. in Lounge 1447 on the 14th Floor.
Showroom open houses, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., on the 14th floor include Century Furniture, Suite 1464; and Janus et Cie, Suite 1420.

Ashley Furniture HomeStore has purchased a 121,344-square-foot warehouse in the Miramar neighborhood just north of San Diego for $5.67 million, from seller Toppan Electronics.
The two-story warehouse, at 7770 Miramar Road, was a former circuit board manufacturing and distribution center for Toppan, according to a statement from brokerage firm CBRE, which represented the seller.

British bedding retailer Dreams has been sold to private equity firm Sun Capital Partners.
Administrators for the beds and furniture firm, Ernst & Young, said on Wednesday it had sold the struggling company's business and assets for an undisclosed sum, securing it new investment and allowing it to operate outside of insolvency.
With the acquisition, Sun Capital Partners buy 171 of Dreams' 266 stores, as well as its head office and two manufacturing sites. Sun Capital's current home furnishings holdings are Lexington Home Brands, Rowe Furniture and Sleep Innovations.
