Casual Furniture Assn. Webinar for Retailers

By Home Furnishings Business in Casual Furniture on September 30, 2010

The International Casual Furniture Association has set a webinar to help outdoor furniture retailers discover new ideas for expanding sales.

"Expanding the Market Mix: The Outdoor Kitchen and Other Outdoor Rooms," scheduled for 2-3:30 p.m. EST on Wednesday, Oct. 6, will feature Barbara Templeman and Cheryl Alters Jamison.

Templeman operated her own interior design firm in Minneapolis for eight years before relocating to Santa Fe in 1993. Jamison has made a name for herself as a food and travel author, educator and exterior design entrepreneur. In 2008, she launched an exterior design business, drawing on her experience in outdoor cooking and creating outdoor living spaces. Now she collaborates on design projects with Templeman through a joint venture called insideOUTsantafe.

Their webinar will offer ideas for add-on sales at a variety of price points, including locally-made artisan products, cooking and gardening tools, how-to-books and even furnishings and cooking accessories for children. They also will explain how to maximize opportunities to work with interior/exterior designers, landscape architects, builders and contractors.

The webinar is free to ICFA members and $95 for non-members. Registration is available here.

Costco Comments on Shooting Death

By Home Furnishings Business in Legal on September 30, 2010 Costco (NASDAQ: COST) has released a statement regarding the July shooting death by police of Erik Scott, an employee at its Summerlin, Nev., warehouse.

On Tuesday, a jury ruled the police action justified after an inquest into the incident. On July 10, police came to the warehouse in response to a 911 call after Scott tried to enter the workplace with a firearm.

Issaquah, Wash.-based Costco had refrained from public comment while the investigation was pending.

"We are making this statement now because the official inquest has concluded, and because we have been advised that friends and family of Mr. Scott plan to protest in Summerlin this week, demanding that Costco terminate the employment of one or more of our employees who played a role in the events on that date," the Costco statement read. "Such actions can only be intended to inflame public sentiment in connection with planned litigation, and have no reasonable relationship to the cause of Mr. Scott's untimely death. We intend to vigorously resist any use of our private property by anyone for this purpose, and will apply to the court for relief if any such threatened trespass is attempted."

Stylus Expands Las Vegas Design Center Presence

By Home Furnishings Business in Las Vegas on September 30, 2010

Canadian upholstered furniture manufacturer Stylus Sofas has added more than 7,000 square feet to its Las Vegas Design Center showroom.

"We are pleased to expand in Las Vegas Design Center," says Jason Harris, vice president of sales and marketing for Stylus Sofas. "We are a good fit with the Design Center because of the extensive customization we offer. Designers and their customers can use this customization to create a sofa that perfectly completes their décor plan at a price point that is much less than a one-of-a-kind design built by custom upholsterer."

Harris added that the expanded space--showroom A229 in the World Market Center--allows additional room to show more products, including Stylys' in-stock program and custom made-to-order collection.

"Stylus Sofas serves as a terrific example of a forward-thinking company positioning itself for success in a down economy," said Randy Wells, vice president of Las Vegas Design Center. "The company makes an outstanding product and this expansion provides them with a great space to tell their story in full."

Stylus offers contemporary and traditional sofas, loveseats, chairs, sectionals and sofabeds for commercial and residential spaces. Stylus is committed to making environmentally sound choices. From the wood supply used to frame each piece, to the zero-waste, Chlorofluorocarbon-free foam used in cushions, Stylus manufactures its furniture line in a Vancouver-based facility that relies on natural light skylights and uses recycling programs for paper, cardboard, plastic and foam waste.

"All of the products we manufacture are produced with eco-friendly materials and processes," said Harris. "A consumer can also choose to make their sofa greener by choosing a soy-based foam that reduces the petro-polyol input by 30 percent."
