President Trump has announced his intentions to impose new tariffs on Mexico in an effort to crack down on immigration at the southern U.S. border, according to a report from CNN.
Trump said in a White House statement that the first round of tariffs would begin on June 10 at 5% "on all goods imported from Mexico."
The White House indicated the tariff would increase to 10% on July 1 if Mexico does not comply. If the country continues to not act, the White House said, the tariff will increase to 15% on August 1, 20% on September 1 and 25% on October 1.
The statement also said Trump would carry out his threat under authority from the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
