Gov. Pat McCrory's budget recommends a 50 percent state funding cut for the High Point Market, but not until mid-2014.
The proposal gives the furniture market time to raise money from other places. The market would take relatively small state cuts later this year, with the one-half reduction kicking in during the summer of 2014, under McCrory's plan.
"That would really hurt it very, very dramatically," said Tom Conley, president and CEO of the market.

Upholstery source Man Wah - known here in the UK for its Cheers brand - said it has entered into agreements of intent to expand its store network in mainland China.
The Hong Kong listed furniture group said it had made the agreements at the International Famous Furniture Fair in Dongguan, which finished Wednesday.

John Ray Weir entered the furniture business in 1948, after politely listening to a business proposal as a courtesy to his father.
His gracious consideration of the shopkeeper's offer became Weir's Furniture Village, the family business he led and maintained a keen interest in for the next 65 years.
Weir, 102, died Monday of natural causes at his Dallas home.

The U.S. Department of Commerce has exempted Legacy Classic Furniture's Heritage Court bench from duties on wood bedroom furniture from China.
In June 2010, Legacy Classic requested a ruling by the DOC to determine whether the Heritage Court bench is outside of the scope of the wood bedroom furniture antidumping order.
The Court of International Trade sustained DOC's ruling that the bench falls outside the scope of the order on March 6 this year.
In the event the CIT's ruling is not appealed or, if appealed, upheld, DOC will instruct U.S. Customs and Border Protection to liquidate entries of Legacy's Heritage Court Bench without regard to antidumping duties, and to lift
suspension of liquidation of such entries.
