Timberlake to Keynote Designer Appreciation Day

Bob Timberlake will be keynote speaker at the annual Designer Appreciation Day hosted by the High Point Design Center on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at the Antique & Design Center in Historic Market Square, ground floor.

The Lexington, N.C., artist's talk, titled "Design from the Heart," will cover his work in the furniture industry for more than 40 years, including his newest collections of furniture with Century Furniture. A lunch sponsored by the Market Square showrooms will be served prior to his presentation. 

A professional artist and designer in the American realist style, Bob Timberlake is renowned for lifelike depictions of his rural North Carolina home. His 1990 The World of Bob Timberlake home furnishings line pioneered the eclectic, lifestyle furniture look and remains the world's best-selling furniture brand.  In 2010, Mr. Timberlake was inducted into the American Association of Furniture Hall of Fame.

Bassett to Create HGTV Home Collection

By Home Furnishings Business in licensing on September 8, 2011 Bassett Furniture (NASDAQ: BSET) has partnered with HGTV to create a licensed line of upholstery and accent furniture to be available in stores in 2012.

The HGTV Home line will be available in Bassett Home Furnishings stores, and a separate collection will be made available to top 100 and independent retailers across North America and in select international markets.

The collections will be displayed in new showrooms at the International Home Furnishings Center at the High Point Market in April 2012 and at the World Market Center in Las Vegas in July 2012.

"This strategic alliance brings together Bassett's knowledge of the furniture industry through more than a hundred years of building hand-crafted furniture with the popularity and credibility of the HGTV brand," said Robert H. Spilman Jr., president and CEO of Bassett Furniture Inds. "These products will inspire homeowners and offer consumers exclusive designs and quality without compromise."

The HGTV Home consumer product line, launched earlier this year, includes offerings in paint, flooring, lighting and soft goods. HGTV Home products are designed to be functional and stylish, providing consumers with the right blend of form and innovation. Rooted in great design and aligned with current marketplace trends, the products translate the rich content, educational and inspirational voice, and great style that consumers love about HGTV to home and lifestyle products.

Belgrad to Consult with LPK International

By Home Furnishings Business in Executive Changes on September 8, 2011 Furniture industry veteran Don Belgrad has joined LPK International as a consultant in the company's business development team.

Belgrad recently retired from upholstery and case goods supplier Schnadig International.

"We are delighted that Don has an interest in working with our team to help us fine tune our strategy and organization," said Peter Kroll, president of LPK International. "The changes in our industry, at both the wholesale and retail levels, are dramatic and LPK International will be better prepared to serve the retail community. Don's availability and interest in working with us couldn't be more timely."

In his position, Belgrad will work closely with Kimberly Kroll, executive vice president, and Annie Balonick, vice president of market development, to build customer accounts with Top 100 furniture retailers and to shore up LPK's ability to design exclusive product.

In addition, he will consult with Andrew Wolfberg, vice president of global sourcing, on the company's expansion of sourcing and quality control with its Asian organization. Belgrad will also assist Josh Wesolowski, director of design, with product design.

"I am very excited about working with a smart, energetic team of young people who are eager to and capable of making the necessary changes to succeed in our highly competitive industry," Belgrad said.

NHFA Seeks Retailer of the Year Nominations

By Home Furnishings Business in Furniture Retailing on September 8, 2011 The National Home Furnishings Association is accepting nominations for its 2012 Retailer of the Year awards.

The awards are presented annually during the Spring High Point Market, one to a retailer with a sales volume under $10 Million, and one to a retailer with a sales volume of $10 Million or above. The award, signified by a crystal obelisk, is the highest honor the 92-year-old trade association can bestow upon a member.

Candidates for the award must be nominated by active members of the home furnishings industry. Nominees must be stocking dealers or employed by a store selling furniture to the consumer on a day-to-day basis. 

Recipients are selected for their outstanding contributions to the home furnishings industry, exemplary service to the community and personal business achievements.

The deadline for nominations is Oct. 31.  Nomination forms can be obtained by emailing: mbolek@nhfa.org

Ryan Returns to AmericasMart as CFO

By Home Furnishings Business in on September 8, 2011 Jack Ryan has returned to AmericasMart as acting chief financial officer.

Ryan rejoins the company following his retirement from the company as president in 2001. A financial industry veteran with more than 22 years with AMC-affiliated Portman companies. In his new position, Ryan will direct all financial operations and will represent the company in the financial community.

€œJack€™s leadership, particularly during the creation and early development of AmericasMart, was critical to our initial successes in building market share and brand equity," said Jeffrey Portman. "As his direct report, I learned much from Jack then and will continue to gain from his expertise."

During Ryan€™s original tenure, the AMC global home and gift franchise grew with the advancement of AmericasMart€™s national and international buyer base, the alignment of its Atlanta operations and the AMC-managed California Gift Show (later divested) and the expansion of international partnerships with affiliates in the United Kingdom and Europe.

 €œWe are a much-different company today than we were at Jack€™s departure, with a different industry landscape presenting huge opportunities for growth," Portman said. "We look forward to Jack€™s decisive financial leadership in our vigorous pursuit of that growth."
