A group of eight La-Z-Boy stores in the Southeast were able to deliver 11 tractor-trailer loads of gently used furniture to charitable groups through a Semi-Annual Trade-In Sale that begins again Wednesday.
The La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries stores that are offering discounts of up to $250 for donations of used furniture in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia are operated by Tipperary Sales, Augusta, Ga.
From Oct. 1 to Nov. 3, customers trading in suitable furniture will get a trade-in credit of $150 on a new chair and $250 on a new sofa. Shoppers can get the same discount by making a donation of $25 the customer’s charity of choice.
In addition, more than $16,000 in cash donations were distributed to charities.
“It’s become part of our charitable commitment the communities we serve. We are pleased that it has such a large and far-reaching impact,” said Martha Brown, co-owner of Tipperary Sales, which operates the La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries stores.
Last year, the trade-ins filled 11 53-foot trucks that delivered the items to charitable groups that include Augusta Urban Ministries of Augusta, Ga.; Low Country Food Bank of Charleston, S.C.; Assistance League of Charlotte/Pineville, N.C.; the Oliver Gospel Mission of Columbia, S.C.; Miracle Hill Ministries of Greenville/Spartanburg, S.C.; and Middle Georgia Food Bank of Macon, Ga.

Lawsons Home Furnishings in Aiken, S.C., will double its size to 35,000 square feet when it relocates to a new location next year, the Aiken Standard reported Monday.
Construction is expected to start soon on the new location, where Lawsons is waiting for completion of a site survey.
“We should start as soon as we get that done,” Lawsons Operations Manager Randy Laster said in the report. “We will hopefully be open by spring or summer of 2009.”
Lawsons’ key vendors include Ashley, La-Z-Boy, Broyhill and Lane. Laster said the current location has limited storage space, since the warehouse is on the second floor of the building. He also said the retailer will likely hire more staff to accommodate increased volume.
The new store will feature a Broyhill gallery and La-Z-Boy comfort studio.

Case goods manufacturer Statton Furniture Manufacturing Co., Hagerstown, Md., will close around the end of the year, the Hagerstown Herald reported Monday.
Statton President T. Hunt Hardinge III said the company’s sales were off significantly in recent months, down about 50 percent in June and August from a year ago, and worse in September. A clearance sale is scheduled for Oct. 11-12. Schlossberg said the company probably will close around the end of the year.
Statton employs around 38 workers.
Statton makes high-end cherry home and office furniture.
Hardinge told the paper it’s hard for the company to compete with low-cost imports and that two important customers, Rose Furniture and Wood-Armfield, both in High Point, have closed in the past two years.
From a 50,000-square-foot plant built in 1926, Statton grew to around 185,000 square feet by 2002, and 10 years ago had 200 employees.
