Troy Rivington, founder of Denver-based design firm Rivington Marx Interiors, has been selected as a featured designer at this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas. Rivington and his team will present “The Nile Nocturne” in the reimagined French Renaissance-style residence at 2999 Turtle Creek Boulevard.
Beginning with an opening day preview on Friday, Nov 13, visitors to the esteemed show will transcend into the eclectic, curated world of “The Nile Nocturne.” This richly layered bedroom suite is inspired by the romance and intrigue of Cairo in the 1940s.
“Rather than creating a literal Egyptian interior, we imagined the private room of a well-traveled collector—someone who has spent a lifetime looking, acquiring, and bringing historical textiles, objets d'art and antiquities home,” Rivington says. Influences from French Art Deco, Egyptian Revival and 19th-century English aristocratic elegance are combined in an aesthetic that cannot be immediately defined, and is instead sophisticated and slightly mysterious.
Take, for example, the moody, custom-designed Chinoiserie wallcovering by Schumacher, which combines with a suede ceiling by Perennials that is laser etched with an enchanting gold foix bois pattern. Underfoot, dark sisal carpeting is layered with century-old antique rugs from Egypt. Warm brass, lacquer, plush upholstery and richly textured fabrics introduce glamour without tipping the suite into formality, while sculptural furniture and unexpected combinations of color and pattern give the room its more contemporary edge.
Seven dramatic brass chandeliers gather overhead in a single sculptural gesture, and a fireplace slab covered in Artistic Tile offers a warm hearth, paired with an Art Deco screen that evokes Coco Chanel’s mirrored home staircase. Antique carved-ivory Chinese floral panels, sourced from the Coors family estate, add another layer of provenance. A raw, expressionistic portrait by William Stoehr alludes to the unnamed faces a collector would meet along the way as he acquires items with soul—like an antique griffin carved console table, Nubian Iron Statue, Peruvian throw, vintage sconces and brass floor candleholder.
Upholstered pieces are equally collected and textural, with antique and contemporary furniture from Made Goods wrapped in Schumacher and Romo fabrics and finished with Samuel & Sons trims and tape. The Vanguard chocolate distressed leather upholstered bed provides a rest akin to a five-star hotel, while the Made Goods oxblood dresser and bistro table holds the wares gathered along the way.
Curated pieces suggest time spent in Cairo alongside Art Deco nods to Jean-Michel Frank, Jean Royère and Armand-Albert Rateau. “The Nile Nocturne” is ultimately less about recreating Cairo than imagining the life of the person who might have returned from it. Because after traveling from Paris to Istanbul to Cairo, the explorer needs a decadent place to rest, if only for a night or two, surrounded by the acquisitions from his travels.
Benefiting Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, Dwell with Dignity and The Crystal Charity Ball, the showhouse will host an Opening Day Preview on Friday, November 13. Visitors can explore the reimagined estate and experience The Nile Nocturne through Sunday, December 6.
