Crystorama Brings World of Production Design to HPMKT

What do camera backs, flats, Kelvin scales, cycloramas, set extensions, hero objects and lighting changeovers have to do with interior design? When a space is being designed through the lens and for an audience, nearly everything.

Crystorama will take High Point Market attendees behind the scenes of television production design with “And That’s Showbiz, Baby: An Inside Look at the World of Production Design & Set Decoration,” October 17, from 4:00–5:00 p.m. at the Crystorama showroom, IHFC H241.

Moderated by designer and television personality Brian Patrick Flynn, the candid conversation will feature Emmy-winning production designer James Pearse Connelly of Studio Connelly and art director and design producer Dawn Marie Heuer of The Heuer Design Collective.

Together, the panelists will explore a side of design that audiences rarely see: the highly specialized process of creating environments specifically for television and the camera.

Drawing on work across programs including The Kelly Clarkson Show, Project Runway, Wheel of Fortune, Top Chef, The Voice, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Hack My Home and Trading Spaces, the conversation will examine how designers navigate intense production schedules, creative pressure, collaboration, lighting, camera angles, rapid changeovers and the countless technical decisions required to make a space resonate on screen.

From the temperature of a light source to the placement of a hero object, production design requires creatives to consider not only how a room looks and functions in person, but how it translates through a lens.

“Designing for television introduces an entirely different vocabulary and set of considerations,” said Flynn. “Backs. Flats. Kelvin scales. Pattern moirés. Cycloramas. Set extensions. Non-glare acrylic. Ground plans. Warm light. Cool light. Changeovers. Hero objects. They may sound incredibly specific to production, but when you’re designing through the lens and for an audience, they have everything to do with design.”

The program is part of Crystorama’s Fall 2026 High Point Market programming, which brings together designers and industry leaders for conversations addressing both the creative and business realities shaping the profession today.
