HAY Introduces Mimi Sofa by Philippe Malouin

Designed by British Canadian designer Philippe Malouin, Mimi is an inviting sofa defined by the interplay between precise structure and a fluid silhouette.
The idea for the sofa came, unexpectedly, when Malouin found himself looking at dog beds. ‘They have these plush, protective edges with a soft central cushion, and Mimi borrows a lot from that logic,’ says the designer. The result is a sofa with concise, sculptured contours which are softened by gently draped upholstery, giving the design a relaxed yet refined expression.
’This is very much an everyday sofa. The kind you spend an entire Sunday on or curl up on to watch a good movie with a friend or a partner,’ says Malouin. The precise stitching along the upper edges emphasises the sofa’s defined outline, before loosening gradually into a skirted base. The fully removable slipcover defines its relaxed character, allowing for easy maintenance and renewal. ‘Its construction is exciting in its own way, because the cover can be removed and cleaned. It’s the kind of upholstery that feels essential to daily life.’
The Mimi Sofa sits naturally within HAY’s design universe while offering a slightly different expression. ‘This is the most casual sofa we have, but it’s also very precise,’ says Rolf Hay, co-founder and Creative Director of HAY Furniture. ‘It’s quite an achievement how sharp it is, while also being soft, gentle and comfortable.’
‘I’m really excited about the release of Mimi,’ says Malouin. ‘Not only because I’ll have it in my own home, but also because the team at HAY and I have created a piece of functional design that feels accessible - something I would choose for myself and my friends. It’s incredibly satisfying to know that every day, people will make it part of their daily lives.’
Available in multiple sizes - from one to three seat options - as well as an ottoman, Mimi comes in a selection of high-quality fabrics and matching square or rectangular cushions for added comfort.
