Herman Miller Announces Global Brand Creative Directors

Herman Miller announced today that Kim Colin and Sam Hecht have been appointed the brand’s Global Creative Directors. In their roles, Colin and Hecht will serve as champions of the brand, guiding the products, communications, and experiences Herman Miller delivers to customers around the world.

Colin and Hecht are founding partners and principals of Industrial Facility, which will continue to operate as their London based design office. Their work spans design research, creative direction, and product design; they have created groundbreaking products for international brands, from lamps to chairs, tables to sofas, watches to office systems. Consultants and design partners to Herman Miller for over two decades, Colin and Hecht have stepped into this expanded role at a critical time for the storied design brand.

“Kim and Sam have been extraordinary partners to Herman Miller for over twenty years. They are transformational in their thinking, and passionate about creating solutions that are culturally resonant, commercially relevant, and long-lasting,” says Ben Watson, Chief Creative Officer, MillerKnoll. “We are thrilled to expand our partnership with Sam and Kim—I look forward to how they’ll help us shape the brand’s trajectory in the years to come.”

Colin is from Los Angeles, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts from UCLA and a Master of Architecture at SCI-Arc. Hecht, from London, trained as an industrial designer, attending Central Saint Martin’s School of Art before earning a master’s degree at the Royal College of Art.

Their partnership with Herman Miller began in 2006, growing the brand’s portfolio to include Lino Task Seating, Formwork Storage, Plex Lounge, Wireframe Sofa Group, Ode Lamps, Civic Table Program, the Locale System, and the expansive and versatile OE1 Workspace Collection. Colin and Hecht began serving Herman Miller as creative advisors in 2008.

“We’re taking a long view—and are thrilled to continue a Herman Miller tradition of enriching lives and contributing to culture over time. We take this responsibility to heart,” says Colin.

“Herman Miller continues to create new perspectives, because they believe, like we do, that design is very much alive,” adds Hecht.

Both Colin and Hecht are Royal Designers and Fellows of the Royal Society of Arts. Colin received her RDI in 2015, becoming the first female product designer included. Hecht received his in 2008. In addition to their products for Herman Miller, they have designed products for Muji, Emeco, Mattiazzi, AndTradition, Google and Santa & Cole. Their works are held in permanent collections worldwide, including the Cooper Hewitt and the Museum of Modern Art in New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Art Institute of Chicago; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Victoria and Albert Museum and the Design Museum, both in London; The Finlandia Museum and the Helsinki Design Museum of Finland; and the State Museum of Applied Arts in Munich.

Colin and Hecht have won five iF Design Gold Awards, as well as awards from Red Dot, Design Museum, D&AD and Dezeen. They are both dedicated design educators and lecture frequently. Colin has taught at international schools including ECÁL, the Royal College of Art, and The Architectural Association. Hecht was Visiting Professor at both Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design and at the Royal College of Art. Their monograph entitled Industrial Facility (published by Phaidon Press, 2018) catalogs their portfolio.
