Thayer Coggin Collection Brings Back Iconic Scoop Chair

Originally designed by Milo Baughman in the early 1970s, the iconic Scoop Chair returns to the Thayer Coggin collection for this season’s High Point Market. The reissued style featuring an Ultrasuede upholstery cover will be on display in the legacy brand’s showroom located at 230 South Road.

With an effortless modern spirit that made its initial launch a standout, the Scoop Chair is defined by its light-scale silhouette and sculptural lines.

“The result is a chair that feels both architectural and inviting,” says Royale Wiggin, CEO, Thayer Coggin. “It’s an elegant expression of Baughman’s belief that comfort and form should work seamlessly together.”

Inside the frame, a curved plywood structure supports tightly upholstered foam-and-fiber seating, creating a supportive yet relaxed sit. Signature “tootsie” roll arms and tailored welting along the outside back highlight the chair’s thoughtful detailing, reinforcing its refined mid-century character. Notably, the polished stainless steel exterior frame pairs with a gently curved upholstered shell that appears to float within the structure.

Shown in Ultrasuede® HP Malibu to commemorate its relaunch, the Scoop Chair takes on an added layer of luxury combined with high performance benefits.

“We’re excited to spotlight a fabric cover that nods to the chair’s historical context while helping us bring it into the 21st century,” adds Wiggin. “The Ultrasuede brand follows a similar lineage, while its performance characteristics align with today’s consumer expectations.”

Developed by Toray Industries, Ultrasuede is an innovative non-woven material known for its exceptional durability, soft hand, and easy care—surpassing many contract upholstery standards while remaining breathable, water-resistant, and colorfast. Its material composition now consists of 30 percent plant-based fiber.

Reintroduced for a new generation, the Scoop Chair remains a sophisticated accent in modern interiors—light in appearance, comfortable in use, and unmistakably Baughman.
