Johnson Hartig & Patterson Flynn Collaborate for New Rug Collection

When it comes to color, pattern, and unexpected juxtapositions, L.A.-based designer Johnson Hartig is fearless. His clothing label, Libertine, rocked the fashion world when it debuted in 2001 with influences as disparate as the punk rock scene, science and nature, and canonical works of art.

His new rug collection for Patterson Flynn puts an emphasis on beautiful textural effects, saturated colors and, of course, his signature inventive graphics. The bold looks for which Hartig has become famous along with more restrained colors and patterns are both represented, but they all sport his quintessential cheek and charm. Crafted of Persian and Tibetan hand-knots in wool and silk, this introductory collection is a nod to Hartig’s design journey, his world travels, and his boundless curiosity.

COLLECTION INSPIRATION:

When you can’t find what you’re looking for, sometimes you need to create it yourself. Johnson Hartig was eager to design the types of rugs he was having trouble sourcing for his own home: Timeless, informed, inspiring design made with unmatched quality.

For his creations for Patterson Flynn, he sought inspiration from history: a 17th century woven fabric remnant from India, 1970s-era Parisan décor, 16th century French emblem books, and scientific illustrations. The resulting collection is a tribute to Hartig’s inimitable perspective and knack for interpreting familiar colors, motifs, and designs in new and unanticipated ways.

Included in the collection are:

JILLY - SEABLUE

A vintage block print fabric inspired Jilly, an intricate floral vine pattern captured in a row of elongated capsule shapes. Concentric arches of blooming garlands outline the central shapes in an effect reminiscent of mosaic tile. With a single color on an ecru background, the monochromatic rug is an easy foundational piece. Part of Johnson Hartig’s first collection with Patterson Flynn, Jilly has a Persian hand-knotted wool construction finished with baby fringe.

JUPIEN - GREEN

Graphic and bold, Jupien draws on Bauhaus principles and a ‘70s modern appeal that’s just as at home with Georgian antiques as it is with Mondrian and Lucite. A grid of ivory squares march across an emerald-green background, with elongated black chevrons creating a three-dimensional illusion. A combination of fibers adds to the effect: the motifs are in wool while the background is silk, offering a textural contrast and an unparalleled hand. Part of Johnson Hartig’s first collection with Patterson Flynn, Jupien features a Tibetan hand-knotted construction.

JUPIEN - IVORY

Graphic and bold, Jupien draws on Bauhaus principles and a ‘70s modern appeal that’s just as at home with Georgian antiques as it is with Mondrian and Lucite. In solid ivory, this rug is a study in textures, with varying pile heights creating the tone-on-tone pattern, The highest pile, which defines the central squares, is 100 percent silk, the lowest is 100 percent wool, and the medium pile is a 50-50 blend. The result? Quiet sophistication and a sumptuous hand. Part of Johnson Hartig’s first collection with Patterson Flynn, Jupien features a Tibetan hand-knotted construction.

MISE EN PLACE - BLACK

A celebration of designer Johnson Hartig’s earliest esoteric design influences, Mise En Place takes its visual cues from 16th century French emblem books. Arranged in rows, every emblem is unique. Mythical creatures, celestial images, scientific illustration, and Latin phrases — including the words “Amo Libertinae”, a reference to Hartig’s label—are among the motifs depicted in a detailed, etched style on a cream background. Double rows of dots form a simple border, with shading details in the corners. Part of Hartig’s first collection with Patterson Flynn, this Tibetan hand-knot construction is 100 percent wool.

VILLA TRIANON

Inspired by botanical illustrations, this area rug celebrates flowers, ferns, and foliage in shades of pink and green on an ivory ground. Each of the unique botanicals is contained within a green picture frame accented with an ivory label motif. With the faux frames and detailed illustrations, the pattern beautifully blends the romantic and the scientific, one of designer Johnson Hartig’s trademarks. Part of Hartig’s first collection with Patterson Flynn, this Persian hand-knotted rug is crafted in wool, with the frames knotted in silk for a delightful contrast in texture and sheen.
