Bassett Furniture Introduces HideAway Collection

Bassett Furniture’s (NASDAQ: BSET) casual dining HideAway Collection, its 100-percent Made in America, solid wood program of customizable product that can be scaled for spaces of all sizes, delivered to retailers in 30 days or less, is contributing double-digit sales increases for retailers.

Equipped with self-storing leaves hidden under the tabletops, the HideAway program offers consumers a choice of four table shapes (rectangle, boat, oval and gathering), two table heights, five leg styles and three edge profiles. All tables are built to order in solid silver maple and finished in a choice of six, dimensional, multi-step wood finishes and/or eight curated painted finishes. To complete the look, the program offers a choice of 10 wood dining chairs and 10 upholstered dining chairs available in a choice of 400-plus fabrics and 45-plus leather options.

John Hanna, design director and buyer at J&K Home Furnishings, a seven-store chain based in South Carolina, said “the demand for domestic product is growing and we’re experiencing the biggest resurgence in requests for American-made, solid wood product that I have seen in my career. We've seen a 25-percent uptick in sales since we started offering HideAway last summer. That increase is also due in part to the fact that Bassett is filling a void in the marketplace by offering high-quality, solid wood construction that allows customers to customize style, finish, and fabric, all at an affordable price point.”

Indeed, the retailer continued, “HideAway is so successful because Bassett is narrowing the gap in price point between what-you-see-is-what-you-get imports, and the ability to customize style, finish and fabric options.”

Suggested retail for a solid wood Bassett Benchmade HideAway table begins at $2,699, and chairs start at $399.

“Bassett is very fortunate that we still manufacture domestically in our hometown of Bassett, Virginia, and there’s excellent perceived value in solid wood,” said Matt Johnson, vice president of domestic wood.  “HideAway leverages all the good things we do in our highly successful Benchmade solid wood dining program for consumers who don’t have the space for a grand scale, 126-inch live-edge dining table in their home.”

“Many homes are now open-concept and floor plans are getting smaller, so people will often prop extra table leaves in closets or behind another piece of furniture,” Hanna added. “Unfortunately, wood can warp in those environments, and finishes can be damaged whenever leaves are moved from place to place. Conversely, HideAway’s leaves are safely and conveniently stored within the table itself and glide into place on ratcheted rails, making it an ideal choice for open-concept floor plans.”

“In developing this program, we did our homework in terms of how people are living today and what they want from their spaces,” said Matt Johnson, vice president of domestic wood at Bassett. “HideAway allows for a fully functioning dining area in the preferred size and shape and style every day, while also offering flexibility to maximize the space when entertaining.”

Finally, the retailer said, “Hideaway is an ideal choice for open-concept floor plans thanks to myriad fabric options that can blend and tie together dining rooms with dens, family rooms, or other adjacent living spaces. Bassett will even allow a customer to send in their own material (COM), and that makes this program extremely unique in its price range.”

“At the end of the day, we’re a leading upholstery company and we are leveraging all the wonderful fabrics our merchants are buying to amplify our HideAway program,” Johnson said. “Where competitors might have a handle of five fabrics to choose from, consumers can choose from our entire fabric line, including leathers, and this has really resonated with consumers. And it’s one more reason why we’re seeing great retail on this program less than a year from its introduction at the High Point Market.”
