Tariffs on Upholstered Furniture & Cabinetry Planned for January Delayed

In a proclamation made from the White House on December 31, the administration invoked Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 to delay increase in tariffs for upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets, and vanities for another year.

Citing “productive negotiations with trade partners to address trade reciprocity and national security concerns with respect to imports of wood products” the proclamation went on to state that the United States would “delay the increase in tariff rates for (the tariffs) that were set to take place on Jan 1, under the September 29, 2025 Proclamation…”

The current 25% tariff on certain upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets, and vanities, as imposed under the September 25, 2025, Proclamation will remain in effect.

The earlier tariffs were imposed due to “National Security Concerns.” These concerns refer to an “overreliance on foreign timber, lumber and their derivative products (that) could jeopardize the United States’ defense capabilities, construction industry, and economic strength."

Due to the reported ongoing productive negotiations regarding the imports of wood, “the President is delaying the tariff increase to allow for further negotiations to occur with other countries.”
