According to sources on 7 News and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, a sprawling furniture factory has been destroyed by a massive fire in Greenacre, western Sydney, with dozens of firefighters working to contain the blaze.
The fire on Beresford Ave in Greenacre broke out just after 3pm inside the furniture business before rapidly spreading to several adjoining buildings in the industrial area. The blaze's intensity meant some additional adjoining businesses were partially fire-damaged, with the extent of the destruction to be determined.
Footage from the scene showed the walls of Sapphire Wood Furniture factory crumbling as the fire raged inside the building. The company is well-respected and liked by customers with a 4.9-star rating on Product Review out of more than 600 reviews.
FRNSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell praised the efforts of firefighters who managed to prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby tire factory while they battled issues with water supply. A business, which contained over $500,000 worth of stock, was also saved.
Commissioner Fewtrell said the building had sustained a partial roof collapse with major damage to some of its brick walls but was ultimately destroyed. A truck next to the factory was also destroyed by the fire.
More than 60 firefighters with 20 trucks were called to the scene and began to bring the blaze under control at around 4:30pm. Crews remained on the scene as flames continued to burn through the structures. Authorities evacuated people from the surrounding area and established a large exclusion zone as a precautionary measure.
The NSW Ambulance paramedics confirmed no injuries had been reported despite the scale of the blaze and the rapid spread between buildings.
FRNSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said spirits and thinners that were stored inside the building for painting and lacquering furniture, made for a high fuel load, "There was a large amount of smoke and flames coming out of the building, fire was spreading to the properties next door…There were also some explosions within the building, and then we subsequently had some walls collapsing."
The cause of the fire will now be the center of an investigation by authorities.
