From Home Furnishing Business

San Fernando Valley Home Furnishings Business to Close After Nearly 100 Years

La Popular Furniture is going out of business after providing quality home furnishings and excellent customer service for nearly a century. The family-owned and operated store has begun its final liquidation sale.

After a lifetime of dedicated service, husband-and-wife owners Ron and Linda Meadow have decided to retire and close the doors of their store for good.

“The Meadows have earned the deep respect of the San Fernando Valley through decades of serving with integrity, and we’re proud to help ensure their final sale reflects that legacy,” said Roy Hester, president of Zimmer Hester Furniture Liquidations.

La Popular Furniture roots trace back to 1932, when JD and Sonia Barsky opened its doors on Whittier Blvd. in East Los Angeles. With the help of their sons, Bernard and Howard, the Barskys served generations of customers for more than six decades until their retirement in 2001. Their reputation for integrity and service left a lasting impression on the local community—one that would later inspire another independent retailer, Ron Meadow.

Meadow’s retail journey began at age 22 after his service in the U.S. Navy when he took a part-time job at Safeway while attending school. After marrying his wife, Linda, he developed a close relationship with his father-in-law, who owned Williams Furniture. Meadow joined the family business where he spent the next 17 years learning the trade. The experience inspired Meadow to open his own store, West Valley Furniture, in 1986 with the help of his wife. West Valley Furniture quickly earned a loyal following for its personal service and integrity.

Through community connections, Meadow came to know the Barsky family and admired the legacy they had built with La Popular Furniture. With the blessing of senior family member Bernard Barsky, they reached an agreement to carry forward the trusted La Popular name, officially adopting it in 1996. The Meadows’ store on Reseda Blvd. became part of a cooperative of independent retailers who shared advertising and branding under the La Popular name, extending its reputation across Southern California.
