Bassett Furniture Announces Expanded Newbury Collection at HPMKT

Bassett Furniture is expanding its popular Newbury collection with several new introductions at the Fall High Point Market (IHFC-C1200) with an expanded focus on natural materials and the introduction of new, handmade artisan pieces.

Newbury, a whole home collection which debuted last Spring, turned the heads of both retailers and interior designers with an elevated traditional design aesthetic and the incorporation of natural materials like grasscloth, pencil rattan and textural gesso finishes. One of the pieces in the original collection, covered in a blue striae-patterned grasscloth, has been nominated for a Pinnacle Award in the occasional storage category.

Now, Bassett is adding a new signature green grasscloth color to the Newbury collection, as well as more pieces incorporating pencil rattan, including a dining table, along with a number of woven rattan pieces that marry well with Newbury’s clean-lined silhouettes and vibrant fabric patterns. Among these are natural rush dining chairs, and several rattan chairs designed to work either as dining chairs or accent seating. Other new additions include a wood cocktail table with a rush base, available in two different finishes.

According to Anne Spilman Souter, creative director at Bassett who led the development of the Newbury collection, the new rush and rattan pieces speak to today’s growing consumer demands for natural, sustainable products with handmade construction stories.

“This a living, breathing category for us that will continue to evolve. These materials feel very current, but also timeless. They pair beautifully with our gesso and grasscloth-texture finishes and complement our blend of traditional and modern casual upholstery shapes and fabrics,” she said.

Further expanding on its move toward natural materials and reimagined traditional designs, Bassett is also unveiling a series of versatile, custom hand-painted chests with handmade artisan appeal. Appropriate for use in bedrooms, living rooms and entryways, the new custom pieces leverage the resurging trends in high-end hand-painted botanical and chinoiserie wallpapers.

“All three chests in the series are truly freehand painted, with no stencils or patterns, making each a unique work of art,” Souter added.

One was inspired by 18th and 19th century vintage botanical prints and will be displayed between two gingham-patterned headboards in the showroom. Another features a blue dimensional chevron pattern, and another, a green star pattern reminiscent of vintage folk-art. All of the chests feature custom hardware in an antique brass finish.

“The early positive reactions to the Newbury line and its use of natural materials excited us and sparked the creativity behind the design of these new additions,” Souter said. “These hand-painted pieces are very on trend right now and something we haven’t seen in the furniture industry yet. They also reflect Bassett’s ongoing dedication to handmade, artisan craftmanship.”
