According to a post on Truth Social, U.S. President Donald Trump said details were forthcoming on tariffs for furniture imports, after announcing levies of up to 50% on such goods last week.
The President’s post on Truth Social stated, “In order to make North Carolina, which has completely lost its furniture business to China, and other Countries, GREAT again, I will be imposing substantial Tariffs on any Country that does not make its furniture in the United States. Details to follow!!!”
Reuters reports that Trump announced a 50% tariff on imported kitchen cabinets and vanities, along with a 30% levy on upholstered furniture, which are set to take effect on October 1. Shares of U.S.-based furniture companies that rely on imports saw a decline in their shares at the end of last week. Retailers with strong domestic production saw gains.
Companies are struggling to hold down prices, and industry executives have recently expressed concern on the tariff effects due to the lack of manufacturing capacity in the United States.
Last week’s tariff announcement that targeted upholstery and cabinets, saw a mixed reaction among the industry, with cabinet makers hailing it as a win, however, there was concern among those who rely on imports from China, Mexico and Vietnam for longer-term effects of price increases which were reinforced by analysts.
Prices for everything from clothes to TVs have gone up in recent months as manufacturers and retailers struggle with the ever-changing tariff environment while also trying to offset rising commodity and supply-chain costs.
