For the second year, IKEA U.S. is proud to host its ONE HOME, ONE PLANET U.S. Dialogue series at Climate Week in New York City, convening purpose-driven, ideas-led doers, thinkers, and changemakers to inspire action and spark change to create a more sustainable future.
This ONE HOME, ONE PLANET U.S. event will take place alongside Ingka Group’s Action Speaks Summit at The Nest Climate Campus. IKEA U.S. will host a fireside chat and panel, "Thinking Outside the Box: How Well-Designed EPR Powers a Circular Future" on Sept. 23 from 1 - 3 p.m., exploring how well-designed Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy can reduce future plastic waste and support circularity.
“We are so lucky to bring together some of the brightest minds in circularity and recycling at Climate Week again this year,” said Javier Quiñones, Chief Sustainability Officer and Chief Executive Officer at IKEA U.S. “With states across the country laying the groundwork for a future system where producers are responsible for the full lifecycle of their products’ packaging, we’re excited to come together and collaborate in person.”
The event will include a panel with the Maryland Secretary of the Environment and the President & CEO of Circular Action Alliance, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Mardi Ditze, Country Sustainability Manager at IKEA U.S., with insights from the World Wildlife Fund, Ellen MacArthur Foundation, and Inter IKEA Group. During an interactive audience reflection session, attendees will share insights, policy ideas, and questions on EPR and circularity topics.
Since its inception in 2018, ONE HOME, ONE PLANET has evolved into many formats – all designed to reach new audiences, bring together experts to brainstorm solutions around sustainability and social issues, and accelerate climate action. By showing up at Climate Week alongside Action Speaks, we are helping create positive change for people and the planet.
As part of its broader commitment to circularity, IKEA U.S. is piloting a new food waste collection program in partnership with Vanguard Renewables. Through this initiative, food waste from select IKEA stores will be transformed into renewable natural gas and low-carbon fertilizer, supporting a scalable model for reducing landfill waste and advancing circular food retail operations.
"Our session has a special focus on extended producer responsibility and how we can take steps together toward improving plastic packaging recycling rates,” said Mardi Ditze, country sustainability manager at IKEA U.S. “EPR can help create a more circular economy, and at IKEA, we’re committed to supporting policies and practices that reduce waste and promote sustainable design.”
At IKEA, empowering people to live better lives within the limits of the planet is at the heart of the business. Sustainability isn't just a goal for IKEA – it's a business imperative. IKEA U.S. is rapidly expanding circular services like Buy Back & Resell, which give our furniture a second life and make sustainable living more accessible.
