Mattress Firm, the nation's largest mattress specialty retailer, announced a significant new partnership with the National Women's Shelter Network (NWSN) to help support women, children and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Mattress Firm is committed to ensuring everyone has access to quality sleep, recognizing its vital role in overall health and well-being.
As part of this partnership, Mattress Firm is contributing financial support, providing sleep products for shelters nationwide and dedicating volunteer time, with the goal of ensuring that every woman, child and family experiencing homelessness has access to safe restorative sleep. The first local activation of the partnership will take place today, August 6, in Seattle, Washington, where 30 Mattress Firm volunteers will help furnish and prepare a new transitional shelter home for women experiencing homelessness.
The company is also inviting its customers to support the NWSN through easy donation opportunities when they make a purchase at one of the company's more than 2,200 retail stores nationwide. Every penny donated by Mattress Firm customers goes directly to the NWSN supporting its critical mission to provide safe shelter and essential resources to people in need.
"At Mattress Firm, giving back is a core value, and we're proud to support women and children in need through this partnership," said Beth Garcia, vice president of communications at Mattress Firm. "The National Women's Shelter Network makes a profound impact in communities across the country, and we are honored to stand beside them in their critical work to provide safety, support and hope."
With a network of 400 shelters and safe haven programs, the NWSN provides over nine million free shelter bed nights and 24 million meals annually. Volunteer opportunities for Mattress Firm associates will include assembling welcome sleep bags for women and baby backpacks for expecting mothers, food prep at local shelters and donation drives.
This month's Seattle makeover, hosted at the new Elizabeth Gregory Home, will include deep cleaning and furnishing private bedrooms, setting up common areas and a therapeutic library nook, creating a welcoming mural and affirmation jar and preparing the new facility to welcome women in need. The event is the first of several local activations planned as part of the national partnership.
"We are facing a crisis on the ground and shelters are struggling to find the resources needed to provide trauma-informed supportive services. Each year, 1.2 million women and 2.5 million children experience homelessness in our country, and the lead cause is gender-based violence and trauma," said Constance Collins, executive director at NWSN. "We know that safe shelter and supportive services save and change lives, and this is made possible with the help of people everywhere and commitments from partners such as Mattress Firm."
