IKEA's OMMJÄNGE Combines Swedish Folklore with Modern Living

OMMJÄNGE is a playful and poetic collection, with a name that carries the meaning of spending time together, in Småland dialect. Drawing inspiration from 19th-century Swedish folklore, it bridges the wisdom of the past into modern homes with a wink, a twist, and a bold splash of colour. Blending Scandinavian craftsmanship with versatile functionality, it proves that the past can hold the answers to contemporary challenges that are more relevant than ever.

Past meets present

The start of this collection is a deep dive into rural Sweden in the 1800s — a time when life was lived in compact cabins, resources were scarce, and every item had to serve both function and aesthetic. Sleeping, eating, socializing, and working all took place in one room, in one space. The connection between then and now became the beating heart of OMMJÄNGE.

When exploring areas untouched by the sun of 19th-century Swedish interiors, unexpected colour palettes and patterns were waiting to be revived. “Folk art isn’t stale — it’s alive with secrets,” says Maria Vinka, the collection's designer, whose inspiration was further sparked by a vivid 1846 bride’s portrait — rich in colour, pattern and ornaments. “That image became my canvas, on which I painted a new story with intricate patterns and vibrant colours to evoke curiosity and integrate history into contemporary design. I hope people embrace the historical connection and appreciate the roots of our Swedish heritage.”

Together with industrial designer Matilda Hunyadi, the duo wanted to break stereotypes — to show how tradition can be both playful and practical. OMMJÄNGE is full of historical nods — without ever being weighed down by them. “Connecting to our heritage keeps us grounded in a fast-evolving world. OMMJÄNGE celebrates our history in a playful way. “ Matilda expressed.

Craftsmanship that defies time

Through a contemporary lens, Maria and Matilda explored how traditional Swedish materials, silhouettes, and craftsmanship could be reimagined for today’s flexible, multifunctional spaces. “Small-space living may feel like a trend today, but the concept has been around for generations,” says Matilda.

OMMJÄNGE brings this spirit forward in pieces that feel both rooted and ready for now. Poplar baskets woven using ancient craftsmanship; a bell-shaped lamp inspired by the curves of a bridal dress; and a drop-leaf table that pays homage to a classic design over 200 years old, while fitting today’s homes with ease. Even a humble wall hook, twisted using the old metal wire method, brings joy to the everyday. Its space-conscious design celebrates simplicity, perfect for modern life’s many shifting needs. “With OMMJÄNGE, I wanted to challenge the idea that folk art is old-fashioned,” says Maria. “It can be just as exciting, relevant, and expressive today.”

The collection leans into classic and long-lasting materials such as solid pine wood, wool, stoneware, and glass, which are chosen not only for their beauty but also for their durability. What ties them all together is the level of craft. “Craftsmanship is key here,” explains Matilda. “Folk art’s detailed decorations inspired me to pair contemporary shapes with timeless techniques. I wanted every piece to tell a story – and be built to last.”

Old solutions create new joy

Beyond its appearance, OMMJÄNGE taps into a question: What if less room means more creativity? Today’s rise in small-space living and hybrid lifestyles may not be for the same reasons as in the 1800s, but they call for the same versatile solutions.

At a time when people are rethinking how they live — downsizing, decluttering, and redefining comfort — OMMJÄNGE offers a character-rich alternative to minimalism. It's a modern folklore. A home where past and present dance together in colour, craft and culture. As Maria puts it, “This collection is about bringing good ideas from the past into the modern world.”

Wherever you live, the pieces in OMMJÄNGE are designed to spark joy, conversation, and a new appreciation for the beauty of what came before. It’s an invitation to rethink what traditional really means. And to slow down just enough to realize, sometimes, the best way forward is to borrow a page from history.

Debuting at the Democratic Design Days in Älmhult, the heart of IKEA, OMMJÄNGE is a limited collection that will be available in selected IKEA stores and online starting September 2025.
