BIA Celebrates 120th Anniversary of Eclipse with Line-Up at HPMKT

Leading mattress manufacturer, Bedding Industries of America (BIA), is celebrating the 120th anniversary of its flagship Eclipse brand with a special, three-bed line-up that celebrates its rich history and old-world craftsmanship, marrying it with modern technologies and a Market promotion in High Point this week.

Available in a choice of three comfort levels—plush, medium and firm—the anniversary models combine high fashion looks with the company’s new patented Spinal Zone III technology, which reinforces the center tri-zone of the bedding surface with over 1,400 nano coils (in queen). Spinal Zone III is clinically proven to reduce back pain, according to company executives.

Designed to draw attention on retail floors, the anniversary models feature two-tone blue borders and blue handles. Each of the models feature 800 pocketed coils plus the1,400 nano coils for a total of 2,200 coils in queen, as well as layers of gel memory foam and high-density foams.

Retailing for $1,499 in queen, the 120th Anniversary beds can be shipped flat or roll packed. BIA is offering Market specials to celebrate the brand’s anniversary, and as part of the anniversary celebration, BIA will also donate a percentage of sales to the Ante4Autism charity.

Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1905, Eclipse grew to be one of the most powerful mattress brands in the U.S. in terms of name recognition and domestic sales in the 1950s and ‘60s, a time when the most important distribution channel for mattresses was department stores.

“Eclipse had a strong presence on all the major department store floors across the country from Macy’s to Gimbles to JCPenney to Lit Brothers,” said Stuart Carlitz, founder of BIA. In order to keep up with the growth and needs of the department stores, Eclipse eventually merged with National Mattress Company (Namaco) in the mid-1970’s and operated successfully until eventually ceasing operations in 1999.

That’s when Carlitz stepped in to buy the brand, purchasing all the intellectual property, labels, point of sale materials and some machinery. Following the acquisition, Carlitz brought back his company’s original name: Bedding Industries of America (BIA).

“I had a vision about what Bedding Industries of America would become and believed that we needed the flexibility of multiple brands with a unique product assortment in order to grow, eventually becoming the one-stop shop for dealers that we are today,” Carlitz said.

Over the years, BIA has celebrated every remarkable Eclipse anniversary.

“Some of the greatest things that have been accomplished in our company have been under the Eclipse umbrella, from Eclipse Ice to Eclipse Curve, and now Spinal Zone III,” he continued, adding that Eclipse holds five U.S. patents, making it unique and easy for RSA’s to sell, and over time has grown into one of the largest licensing groups, with more than 50 factories worldwide.

“The most exciting thing is that while Eclipse has been around for more than a century, it is a brand that is tuned into the modern consumer,” he said.

The Eclipse 120th Anniversary line-up is on display this week at BIA’s High Point Market showroom in the Crown Mark Plaza, 200 E. Green Dr., Floor 4.
