Boss Design Reveals Modular Seating System

Boss Design is proud to reveal Beau, an expansive modular seating system overspilling with comfort and sensory appeal. Too big to keep under wraps, Beau's voluptuous form welcomes the sitter to relax right back into its soft, generous cushioning and experience the ultimate level of comfort.

This big-is-beautiful philosophy extends throughout a wide selection of modular units, enabling interior designers to craft vast landscapes of comfort, with a sense of freedom and openness that puts the user at ease, encouraging conversation and collaboration. With its smooth, clean lines, Beau will bring optimum comfort to a variety of spaces including workplace, hospitality, education and retail.

"A lot of furniture is designed for us to sit 'on', but our ambition with Beau was always to create something people can relax 'into' – seating so soft and relaxed that it molds to the form of the sitter and makes them feel like they are at one with the piece," says Aaron Clarkson, Beau's lead designer.

A COMFORT-FORWARD DESIGN PROCESS
To achieve this level of comfort, the design team built a custom seating jig enabling them to test various forms of suspension along with different combinations of foam. Layers of foam made from different materials, at different densities and thicknesses were tested in pursuit of maximum comfort, while ensuring Beau would return to its original form after use.

Testing the seat with people of different sizes and shapes, the team looked for that 'ahhh' response. It wasn't until a combination of a serpentine sprung seat, a webbed back section and a precise formulation of layered foam was achieved that work began on Beau's external look and feel.

"Beau is big on comfort – both inside and out. The work that went into developing the perfect sit is conveyed through shapes that are oversized, exaggerated and curvaceous. Beau's gentle, organic lines have been sculpted rather than engineered, for a look inspired by the smooth, rounded softness of dough rising and overspilling the pan. It's simple but it's beautiful," says Mark Barrell, design director at Boss Design.

CONVERSE, COLLABORATE, CONNECT
The Beau system includes one and two seats, sitting chaise, bench, end arm, end table and 120-degree corner units, providing specifiers with a comprehensive set of tools to define a space with a multiplicity of seating islands and fascinating snaking interventions. Arranged around a coffee table, the 120-degree turns make a welcome departure from right angles giving a sense of openness that promotes easygoing conversation and collaboration.

With Beau, users are able to connect face-to-face, while optional device chargers in the table units support digital connectivity as well. Meanwhile, Beau's flowing, organic lines continue the design language of the Boss Design portfolio, making it easier for customers to create settings that are cohesive, elegant and comfortable.

"Upholstered in thick, textured fabrics like bouclés or textured weaves, Beau's expansive forms create a perfect backdrop for highlight pieces such as Remi or Amelia to pop to the fore, in patterned fabrics or plush finishes. I think Beau will bring a sense of softness and visual comfort to any space, and that this first impression will be validated every time someone relaxes back into its big, beautiful cushioning," says Aaron Clarkson.
