Sergio Mannino Agency Renovates A. MANO Brooklyn Space

A. Mano Brooklyn, a gallery showcasing local artists' jewelry and home decor design, is a bold and groovy newly renovated space with a clever reconfiguration that has brought flexibility and sustainability into line.

Led by Sergio Mannino Studio, which also conceived the original store's design in 2022, the makeover has brought in a full-size coffee bar within the store. It has also visually reinforced the project's stark and color-drenched signature look, accentuating the composition of saturated terracotta orange and chalk white tones.

The intervention moved the side paneling of the previous little cafe corner toward the room's length to create an extended counter and a new distinct area for coffee prep. The new configuration implied a thoughtful effort to visually rebalance the "blocks" of the different materials and colors—white glazed bricks and orange stained plywood—and seamlessly join them to the wall's baseboard and the floral and the graphic pattern of Nathalie du Pasquier's tiles on the floor.

The design makeover also looked to minimize material waste. With the original store's construction, designer Sergio Mannino pointed out that they were intent on using a sustainable model.

Mannino said, "When we built the original A.MANO Brooklyn store, we focused on how all the different materials were assembled without using glue or mortar. In the new coffee shop, we tested this approach and reused more than 60% of the original components, saving them from landfills."

By designing with screws and custom mechanical parts, the transition allowed the materials to be reused into the new coffee shop layout with flexibility, leading to the original material being repurposed.

The newly expanded café now offers a lively atmosphere where people can engage with craft and community while the retail space thrives.
