Hettler.Tüllman Brings Their Design to Miami Art Week

Designer duo Hettler.Tüllman is taking over Miami Art Week with four shows around the city, a celebration of the studio’s intriguing furniture. Combining global inspiration, an ethical mindset and classic panache, Jula Tüllman and Katja Hettler are showing off tables made out of mycelium (fungi “roots”), woven chairs made in collaboration with Malawian artisans, and more.

Hettler and Tüllman, with studios in Berlin and in Miami, speak the language of Bauhaus in much of their design — and prioritize supporting circular and local economies, reimagining uses for reclaimed and sustainable materials, and emphasizing handcrafted production.

The studio has been balancing these themes since its inception in 2005. Last year, the pair was welcomed into the Makers’ Circle of craftwork innovators at the Shaker Museum in Mount Lebanon, New York.

Get to know Hettler.Tüllmann at multiple locations of this year’s Art Week:

Design Miami, Mindy Solomon Gallery, Booth G20 — Dec. 3–8

Hettler.Tüllmann will be exhibiting a selection of tables and chairs made out of organic and recycled materials at Mindy Solomon Gallery’s booth G20. Play is a table made from baked mycelium (fungi “roots”), while Shells, made in collaboration with Shell Homage, is a 100% biodegradable flat-pack coffee table constructed with egg and nut shells.

Untitled Art Miami Beach, Special Projects (SP9 and SP11 areas — Dec. 3–8

The design duo has been invited to install a selection of its furniture at SP9 and SP11.

At SP9, Hettler.Tüllmann will showcase four woven chairs from its Okoma collection, created in partnership with Malawian artisans from the social enterprise People of the Sun. The studio will also present its Fred and Jacob woven chairs, produced in collaboration with the German basket maker Flechtwerk Berlin, and the playful Puli Chair

SP11 will feature Hettler.Tüllmann Nest installation, six basket-like seats that are also designed in collaboration with People of the Sun.

All chairs from both installations are available for purchase, the Nest seats either as a duo or individually with a wooden base on demand.

In Balance by Hettler.Tüllmann, Bridge Tender House @ the Wolfsonian-FIUNov. 21-Jan. 19

In Balance by Hettler.Tüllmann will take the stage at the prestigious Wolfsonian. The installation, a suspended swing chair delicately set amid an array of bromeliads to form a mobile, is inspired by Art Deco motifs found in the museum’s collection and South Florida’s native plant life.

Disturbances in the Field, Collective 62Dec. 1

Collective 62, an artist-run space for women in different fields, in Miami’s Liberty City, will host a group exhibition curated by artist and curator Michelle Weinstein on Dec. 1. Hettler.Tüllmann will be showing one of the wall pieces it has contributed designed for their ongoing and evolving Miami Maps Project. The installation illustrates the map of one of Miami’s neighborhoods in crocheted “plarn,” a plastic yarn made from recycled shopping bags. It was made in collaboration with the Miami-based Helping Hands Crochet Club.
