Common Thread for the Cure Encourages Giving Tuesday

As the holidays quickly approach, many look forward to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The most important day, however, is Giving Tuesday, which is celebrated on Dec. 3rd of this year. The Common Thread for the Cure Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, asks that you remember those affected by breast cancer with a donation to the Foundation. The Foundation provides financial support through confidential grants to individuals affiliated with the design and furnishings industry. The donations offer relief in areas where insurance does not apply.
For example, a grant can be used to meet financial obligations, household needs, and transportation to medical appointments. The intent is to enhance the quality of life for those who have breast cancer, enabling them to maintain as normal a lifestyle as possible while they are confronting the disease.
The Common Thread for the Cure Foundation was founded in 2000 by the late Suzann Burkhead-Bray and her brother, Scott Burkhead, in honor of their younger sister, Sandra Burkhead Campbell, who died from breast cancer. After seeing first-hand how devastating this disease can be, not only for the individual fighting the disease but for the whole family, Bray focused her passion on helping others, and the concept for The Common Thread for the Cure Foundation was born. In recent years, the organization has seen a dramatic increase in grant applications from women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, many of whom are young mothers. To date, the Foundation has awarded over $1.5 million in grants to nearly 400 deserving recipients throughout North America.
One grant beneficiary shared, “I did not know of The Common Thread for the Cure Foundation until a fellow survivor and colleague mentioned it to me. Shortly after I submitted my application, I received a very timely check that helped to alleviate an immense financial burden at the time. During my illness, I was out of work for 6 months. I am forever grateful for this organization and the much-needed assistance they provide survivors and their families at a time when they need it the most.”
