Top 100 retailer, Sam Levitz Furniture prepares for the final chapter of an incredible 71 years in business with plans to permanently close two stores after its final liquidation sale.
The Levitz family has been a respected name in the furniture industry for generations, setting the standard for retail excellence in their region. Founded in 1953, Sam Levitz Furniture is known for its wide selection of quality home furnishings and commitment to customer service. Leading furniture promotional sales specialist Planned Furniture Promotions (PFP) is handling all going-out-of-business details and events for the two Tucson stores run by second-generation owner, Sam R. Levitz.
“Sam has been an absolute pleasure to work with. His concern for his employees and customers was always at the forefront of our discussions,” said Tom Liddell, senior vice president of PFP. “Planned Furniture Promotions is honored to support the Levitz family during this transition, ensuring that their legacy of customer care continues through this final sale and beyond.”
Originally from Lebanon, Pennsylvania, the elder Sam Levitz inherited his love for retail business from his father who began selling general goods, furniture and appliances in 1910. Sam moved to Tucson in 1941 where he enjoyed a successful career in photography before opening Sam Levitz Furniture in 1953. He married Lee in 1964 and three of the couple’s six children joined them in the family business as well as several of their grandchildren. Their daughters, Kandie and Kathi, were involved in management and marketing roles. The Levitz’ eldest son and current owner, Sam R., took over for his father as president of the company in 1991.
The Levitz family members are known for their integrity and devotion to giving back. The family was honored at the 2012 City of Hope West Coast Golf Tournament for their ongoing contributions to the organization and Sam Levitz Furniture boasts approximately $200,000 in donations each year to various local charities as well. Sam R. Levitz was inducted into the Arizona Home Furnishings Representatives Association (AHFRA) Hall of Fame in 2019 and his granddaughter, Amber Levitz, received Home Furnishings Business’ 40 Under Forty award in 2022.
