Whit-Ash Furniture Going Out-of-Business After Five Decades

Leading furniture promotional sales specialists Planned Furniture Promotions (PFP) is handling the going-out-of-business sale details and events for this half-century old retailer. Whit-Ash Furnishings has earned a reputation of exceptional customer service and built strong community ties since it was founded in the early 1970s by Whitney and Gerry, both Columbia natives and proud veterans who dedicated their lives to serving their country and community.

“Whit-Ash is one of the most respected retailers in our industry,” said Tom Liddell, senior vice president of PFP. “We feel honored that Whitney and Gerry chose PFP to manage this important event, and we will ensure this sale maintains their impeccable reputation.”

Whitney Black founded Whit-Ash Furnishings in 1972 after returning from military service in Vietnam, leaving behind a career in professional photography. Gerry joined the business in 1973 after his own military service. Initially operating from a small 1,200-square-foot storefront, the business quickly expanded, moving to 831 Gervais Street and later to its current location to accommodate its growing customer base.

"My brother and I would like to thank all of our wonderful customers and vendors for their loyalty and support over the past 52 years. It has been an honor to serve so many families and members of the community in our hometown," said Whitney Black.

Located at 919 Gervais Street in the heart of Columbia's Vista district, the 41,000-square-foot showroom of Whit-Ash Furnishings offers a broad selection of quality home furnishings and accessories from top brands such as Craftmaster, Tempur-Pedic, Leather Italia, Stearns & Foster, Howard Miller, American Drew, and Southern Motion.

By the late 1970s, Whit-Ash Furnishings had become South Carolina's largest independent furniture store.
