CarbonShack Releases Nature-Inspired Wallcoverings in Nolar

Featuring intricate patterns and motifs inspired by elements found in the natural world, CarbonShack’s biophilic-inspired artisanal wallcoverings, in earthy, soothing shades and hues, evoke a sense of calm, serenity, and rejuvenation.

Dominated with patterns exemplifying the building blocks of nature – from membranous structures to intricate mycelial networks with web-like patterns – the designs enhance the connection to nature in the home, leveraging the cognitive restoration associated with biophilia.

“Options for new, inventive, and surprising wallcoverings are growing exponentially – particularly with the ease of nimble production provided by digital printing,” says Greg Roth, Senior Designer of CarbonShack. “Plus, with a trend away from whites and neutrals, consumers are really looking to biophilic motifs – nature-inspired florals, minerals, fauna – to bring tranquil schemes and patterns into their spaces without being bland.”

With seasonal pattern and colorway releases planned, the first series of CarbonShack’s wallpaper murals, “Restorative Realm” features microscopic motifs from nature's fibrous forms and kelp, nature’s sustainably renewable resource, living beneath the ocean surface.

Micro-Blossoms

An ancient plant form dating back to the prehistoric era, ferns reproduce via spores, instead of through flowers and pollen. Micro-Blossoms takes its inspiration from microscopic images of fern spores, using the graphic imagery of the spores to create an energetic pattern that dances across the wallcovering. Available in Forest and Peach.

Micro-Floral Links

As the "flower" of the invisible natural world, spores are microscopic organisms that blossom, seed, and reproduce their species. The Micro-Floral Links wallcovering underscores the important connective role that fungi, and the spores that produce them, play in the fragile ecosystems of our natural world.  Available in Oatmeal and Teal.

Mycelium

Largely hidden beneath the surface of the soil, mycelia are considered the great communicators and connectors of the flora world. Mycelia are part of the fungi family; in that they are the roots that produce mushrooms (though not all mycelia produce mushrooms). They break down organic matter – thereby sequestering carbon – and carry the resulting nutrients to plants of all types through their web-like network of roots. They are the facilitators of a symbiotic ecosystem that sustains and supports the forests, fields and woods of the world. The Mycelium design pays homage to the crucial part these organisms play in nature.  Available in Chocolate and Teal.

Chloroplast

Sun Sugar, CarbonShack’s newest line of textiles, lighting and wallpaper, celebrates the miracle of chloroplasts, whose very essence contains the story of creation itself. Somewhere between one and two billion years ago, a chance encounter between a cyanobacterium cell and a eukaryotic cell resulted in the creation of a new class of cells, called chloroplasts. These miraculous new cells could convert sunlight to energy and could absorb carbon to produce oxygen, paving the way for the emergence of all manner of plant life. Without chloroplasts there would be no oxygen-based life on earth. None. The beauty that is all plants, food and animals, all the life we see around us, exists to a large degree thanks to the magic of chloroplasts. Available in Amber Honey.

Kelp

California’s bountiful kelp forests offer stunning imagery, design inspiration, and sustainably renewable resources. As global warming acidifies and heats the oceans, the fragile biodiversity of these unique ecosystems is threatened. The Kelp wallcovering celebrates glorious, seductively flowing strands of California sea kelp, rendered in the rich, deep tones of the sea. With an ombré background of teal that lightens as it rises to the surface, long strands of kelp dance and sway across the wall. Available in Aqua Marine and Deep Ocean.

All designs are digitally-printed on Nolar, a high-performance, non-woven material manufactured without the use of PVC, a material with low recyclability that is considered to be “the single most environmentally damaging of all plastics.”

Despite its inherent harm, PVC (polymerizing vinyl chloride), commonly known as vinyl, continues to be highly prevalent in the wallcoverings industry. PVC is produced from a polymerisation process known for its high energy consumption and the emission of toxic substances, whereas the wood pulp and natural fiber used to produce Nolar are sourced from FSC-certified forests.

Smooth and robust, CarbonShack’s wallcoverings cover a range of durability features largely thanks to the Nolar’s breathability: it has Class A fire ratings and is resistant to mold and mildew. Nolar wall solutions are especially suitable for low-traffic areas that do not require a commercial grade Type II wallcovering.
