Beto O’Rourke’s Mom and of Charlotte’s Furniture Dies in El Paso

According to article on the website of CBS 4 Local News in El Paso and in a post on Beto O’Rourke’s Instagram page, O'Rourke announced the passing of his mother, Melissa O'Rourke, on Sunday morning.

O'Rourke said that his mother departed from this world to join her daughter and husband.

“Our beautiful mom passed from this world early this morning, joining our sister and dad. We are so incredibly fortunate to have been raised and loved by her, a wonderful mom in every way. Our gratitude to everyone who loved her and cared for her. We miss you and love you mom always! - Sister Charlotte and brother B”

O'Rourke is survived by her daughter, Charlotte, and son Beto. The O'Rourke's sister Erin passed away in December of last year.

Melissa was known to many as the owner of the longstanding retail establishment, Charlotte's Furniture, on Mesa Street in west El Paso. The store was originally opened by her parents on Raynolds Street in 1951 and became a fixture in the community.

In 2001, O'Rourke coped with the tragic loss of her husband, former County Judge Patrick O'Rourke. Pat Francis O'Rourke was hit by a car and killed as he was cycling along the shoulder of Pete Domenici Highway, just beyond the city limits of El Paso.

O'Rourke announced she would close her store in 2017, a decision she says did not come easy. In an interview with the El Paso Times, O'Rourke emphasized that this decision was a personal one and not influenced by external factors, including her son's political endeavors.

O'Rourke expressed her gratitude to the community, acknowledging the support received throughout the years.
