Most Popular Room to Renovate is Revealed in Survey by Storyboard

As furniture retailers, manufacturers, designers, and executives in any part of the industry, an area of concern might always be what is the consumer thinking? What are they going to do next?

Giving us a glimpse inside the consumer’s elusive thoughts, Storyboard, makers of high quality, affordable photo tiles revealed which areas of the home Americans want to renovate the most, as well as the states that renovation projects are most popular in.  

Based on the number of monthly Google searches for terms associated with renovating different rooms of the house, the most popular home renovation project in America is a living room makeover, with a total of 629,832 monthly searches.

Coming in a close second is a bathroom renovation, with 620,253 monthly searches. The third most popular renovation project is a kitchen makeover, with a total of 411,130 monthly searches.

The Living Room
After they found out which rooms were most popular, then they found out where they were most popular according to the states. A living room renovation was found to be the most popular home improvement project in 19 states.

The state with the most searches relating to living room renovations is Louisiana, with 312 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. This is followed by New York, with 240 monthly searches, Texas with 235 searches, New Jersey with 231, and Massachusetts, with 227 searches.  

The Bathroom

The Bathroom renovations is the most popular project in 31 states, and Connecticut is the state most interested in bathroom renovations, with a total of 262 monthly searches per 100,000 people. Searches for bathroom-related renovations are also high in New Jersey, with 261 monthly searches, in Florida, with 248 searches, Maryland with 246 searches, and Delaware with 235 searches. 

The Kitchen

Kitchen renovations are the third most searched-for project. Connecticut also searched for kitchen renovations the most, with 176 monthly searches per 100,000 people. Overall, searches for terms relating to kitchen makeovers were also popular in New Jersey, with 169 monthly searches, Maryland, with 159 searches, Massachusetts with 156, and Pennsylvania with 154 monthly searches.  

While searches relating to kitchen renovation didn’t come top in any state, they were also one of the most searched for in Illinois, Virginia, Florida, New York, and Colorado.

The Bedroom

Bedroom renovations are fourth on the list. New York is most interested in bedroom renovations, with a total of 125 monthly searches per 100,000 people. Massachusetts follows with 117 searches, Georgia with 114, Maryland with 110, and New Jersey with 110. No states came out on top for bedroom renovations, searches were also high in states such as Florida, Connecticut, Illinois, North Carolina, and Texas.  

Following the bedroom, in fifth place is the backyard, in sixth place is the basement, in seventh place is the attic and the last in this survey is the Home extension.

Gavin Glick, Co-Founder of Storyboards commented, “There are a number of reasons that people may want to renovate their homes, whether that be to increase its value, or to simply make it more comfortable and enjoyable to live in. And with home renovation and interior design trends constantly changing, it's understandable that people want to refresh and upgrade their homes to make the most use out of their existing space.”

Glick concluded, “Overall, in the US, Northeastern states appear to be the most interested in renovating their home, with New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York all ranking within the top five for highest online searches.”

The top ten states interested in renovating their homes, according to the Storyboard survey, were:

  1. New Jersey, with 903 searches
  2. Connecticut, with 851 searches
  3. Massachusetts, with 843 searches
  4. Maryland, with 839 searches
  5. New York, with 804 searches
  6. Illinois, with 792 searches
  7. Delaware, with 787 searches
  8. Florida, with 779 searches
  9. Virginia, with 768 searches
  10. Rhode Island, with 746 searches
