Currey & Company Introduces Inspired Collections by Aimee Kurzner

Currey & Company’s Director of Furniture, Aimee Kurzner, has been spending a lot of time at the company’s overseas factories for the past 2 years exploring new designs and new materials for the ever-growing furniture collection.

An award winning designer, Ms. Kurzner, received a BFA in Furniture Design from the  Savannah College of Art & Design, and has more than fifteen years of experience  as a furniture designer and maker.

This October Ms. Kurzner’s designs take center stage. Known for her attention to detail, whether it is a removeable drawer liner, a door pull, or an innovative  hinge - it all makes a difference when the final product is manufactured.

The Maya Blue Linen Collection consists of a console table, a credenza, and a chest  with more designs on the drawing board. Elegantly proportioned, the Maya designs are covered in a hand-wrapped blue linen that is lacquered to bring subtle texture to each piece of furniture.

Aimee shares: “Materials and finishes often come before the product design. Lacquered linen was a material I had seen first and thought I wanted to design a collection using the material. I sampled various colors and textures of linen with the lacquer applied and loved  the light denim blue color.”

Aimee has mastered the art of designing statement  hardware and created impressive drawer and door pulls that complement the  Maya pieces. Finished in polished stainless steel, the oversized squares consist of a concentric step patten.

The Memphis Collection is a symphony of wood veneers that have been laser-cut and hand-applied to the wood substrate. Inspired by the famed movement  known by the same name, this collection illustrates why the bold patterns  inherent in the style were so dramatic.

Ms. Kurzner has brought the utmost sophistication to the motifs in a mix of natural oak, Mindi wood in an espresso finish, black Macassar ebony, and mahogany. The scale of the plinth base, which  she pulled in and designed to echo the proportions of the credenza, makes the  brown and tan credenza look as if it is floating. The polished cast-brass door pulls  are so tiny, they all but disappear.

The Kallista Taupe Collection has a taupe finish that enlivens the figured  sycamore veneers on its door and drawer fronts. The wood grain brings the designs a hint of distressing that contrast the rich black of the exteriors. The door pulls are in a polished brass finish.

The styling is inspired by Biedermeier furniture which traditionally featured lighter grain wood with an emphasis on intricate wood grains, restrained elegance, and practical forms.
