Winston-Salem Retailer Going Out-of-Business After 123 Years

According to the Winston-Salem Journal, Rominger’s Southern Furniture Co. is going-out-of-business after 123 years in business. The retailer debuted in April of 1900, making it the oldest family-owned furniture company in Winston-Salem for decades.

In order to liquidate their inventory, the retailer has decided to hold an on-line auction. Over 1,000 pieces of home furnishings are available to bid on. The auction will end at 6 p.m. on May 23.

According to the auction site, “Rominger's Southern Furniture Co. invites you to our exciting furniture auction event at our downtown Winston-Salem showroom. For over a century,  Rominger's has been a trusted source of high-quality furniture for families in Forsyth County and surrounding areas. We will be auctioning extensive collections of fine furniture brands such as England Furniture, Home Elegance, Pulaski, Vaughn Bassett, and Best Chair, offering something for every taste and style.”

“Our auction features an exceptional array of furniture pieces for every room in your home. From cozy sofas to elegant dining sets, the showroom is packed with furniture items that are sure to impress. Join us for this exclusive online event and take advantage of this opportunity to own the furniture of your dreams.”

The decision to close is multi-faceted, foremost being the lack of someone to carry on the business. The third-generation owner passed away last year, and the next generation is not in the furniture retail business.

Also, as with many other retailers, Rominger’s struggled after having to shut-down during the pandemic. The supply chain issues also disrupted the number of customer choices and the store’s niche of selling/delivering floor displays.

The on-line auction is being handled by The Swicegood Group, and it is what they are call “a “wall-to-wall” remaining inventory of new furniture, home décor, accessories, mattresses, rugs and even its moving truck.” Bid prices are expected to increase closer to the end of the auction.
