Leather Manufacturer de Sede Pays Homage to Swiss Roots in Milan

Leather furniture manufacturer de Sede is reflecting on its’ Swiss roots at this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan. During the exhibition, which runs from April 18 - 23, the company is paying homage to its homeland in partnership with one of Switzerland’s leading design studios.

The Salone del Mobile in Milan will run over six days and is attracting over 2,000 international exhibitors. It covers over 170,000 square metres of floor space and is ranked as one of the world’s leading furniture exhibitions.

de Sede is working closely with scenographers from one of Switzerland’s top design studios atelier oï to create an eye-catching display of items from its sculptural furniture range at this year’s event in Milan. Pieces have been chosen that reflect the brand’s focus on the power of nature, landscapes and the fascinating interplay of light and shadow.

The three designers from atelier oï boast extensive expertise in all aspects of design from product through to spaces, which is primarily why the team was chosen to design the de Sede stand this year.

According  to the CEO of de Sede Monika Walser, “atelier oï’s creative philosophy aligns with our own in terms of the way they question norms and create unique spaces using leather, light and design that blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor.”

The ‘Troika’ of the founding members of atelier oï, Aurel Aebi, Armand Louis and Patrick Reymond, present the new sculptures of de Sede in a space shaped by shadows and overlapping layers, which is inspired by materials used in manufacture and de Sede’s company heritage.

The sculptural pieces made in leather and fabric push the boundaries of each material in a playful way and reflect the unique landscape and topography of Switzerland through their dynamic properties. As atelier oï founder Aurel Aebi explains, “This expansive installation plays with light and shadow, with layers and islands, and allows the visitor to actively discover the products on display.”

atelier oï is not just responsible for the design of de Sede’s stand at the Salone del Mobile. The design studio, which is based in Lake Biel, has worked closely with de Sede’s R&D department to create the new DS-808, which will be showcased for the first time at the Salone del Mobile. The sofa’s flowing form has a particularly original and authentic appeal. atelier oï has once again pushed the boundaries of materials design in its own inimitable fashion.
