United Furniture/Lane Layoff News Continues, North Carolina Stores Step-Up

Outlets around the country were shaken by the news that 2,700 workers were laid off just before Thanksgiving by text message or email.

According to the Associated Press, Mississippi-based United Furniture Industries makes furniture under the Lane Home Furnishings brand as well as its own brand. United acquired Lane in 2017 from Heritage Home Group LLC.

On Nov. 21, employees received the now infamous correspondence informing them that they were not to show up to work on Nov. 22. Following that message, on the morning of Nov.22, it was confirmed that their employment was terminated, effective immediately, expected to be permanent, and without the provision of COBRA (interim health insurance).

There are eight plants in Mississippi, one in California, and six in North Carolina. In North Carolina, there have been several area businesses that are stepping up to help the recently laid-off workers find employment.

According to WFMY News2 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Ashley was out at the Winston-Salem facility on Tuesday to be sure the employees without a job knew that Ashley has open positions in manufacturing, distribution, transportation, and administration.

On Facebook, it was easy to find an offer from Darran Furniture. It was an invitation to become part of their growing furniture family. Darran is a family-owned furniture company out of High Point, NC. You can apply for their open positions on Indeed.com.
