Overstock Has Big Plans for the ‘Return Season,’ post-Holidays

In a report by TheStreet.com, it looks like Overstock and UPS are working together to make one of the most unpleasant parts of the holiday more painless: returns.

If their customer needs to return one of their gifts or packages from Overstock, a UPS driver can pick it up (scheduled) without a shipping package provided. Scheduling a pick-up from UPS isn’t new. What is new for them is the concept of not requiring any kind of packaging materials.

Not only does this make the return easier for the consumer, but this will also help decrease the carbon footprint of the holiday season, not only by decreasing the packing materials, but also by scheduling more home-pickups for UPS, giving them more efficient, better for the environment routes.

For Overstock, partnering with UPS gives it access to shipping data that will help them be more efficient, and therefore, be better to their customers. Overstock CEO Jonathan Johnson says, “Initiatives like this one with UPS can go a long way in generating repeat business from our customers.”

Wayfair, Overstock’s main online competitor, has a similar return policy to Overstock, but all returns must be pre-packaged at pickup or drop-off. The UPS/Overstock team-up could help them stand apart from their competitors.
