Diamond Mattress Partners with Child Creativity Lab to Upcycle Waste Materials

Omnichannel bedding brand Diamond Mattress is giving new life to waste materials and inspiring young minds to create new products by donating scrap materials from its Southern California factory to Child Creativity Lab (CCL).

CCL, a local non-profit organization whose mission is to cultivate creativity in children with science, technology, engineering, art and math. It uses materials from Diamond Mattress that would otherwise be thrown away to support educators and parents with their curriculum and makerspaces.

“One of our core values is to leave a positive legacy, and we can’t think of a better way to do that than to provide inspiration to future generations of innovators and makers,” said Breana Pennington, Diamond Mattress vice president.

Materials from Diamond include fabric, yarn and thread spools, plastic and cardboard cores, and zippers. The items are sorted and cleaned by Diamond Mattress employees to ensure they are free of contamination which are then incorporated into STEAM-based kits by children throughout Orange County.

The donation idea was introduced by Diamond CFO Brian Arnold who is a CCL board member and volunteer.

“Converting and donating scrap material doesn’t just help kids – it also helps the environment by keeping these items out of the landfills,” said Arnold.

Diamond Mattress will be recognized as the 2022 Material Partner of the Year at CCL's 10th Anniversary gala event on May 20. Tracey Hill, CCL Chief Executive Officer, estimates that its Depot for Reuse program diverts more than 3 tons of materials from landfills each year, and its partnership with Diamond deepens its ability to support the community.
