Container Shortage Should Ease This Year, Leasing Company Predicts

A container shortage that has plagued the furniture industry for more than a year should be easing soon, according to a story in The Maritime Executive, a shipping industry publication.

The story said container leasing companies are reporting increased production of new containers, which will help alleviate shortages over time and cause container prices to ease.

“We expect container supply will better keep pace with demand in 2022 due to increased new container production volumes, and new container prices have eased over 10 percent from their peak level to roughly $3,400 per 20-foot dry container. However, new container prices remain far above their historical range, and market leasing rates and used container sale prices also remain very high,” Brian Sondey, CEO of Triton International, told the publication. Triton is one of two biggest container lessors in the world.
