Richard Sexton, e-commerce strategist and contributing editor to Home Furnishings Business magazine, will ruck a marathon a day from April 28 – May 26, 2021 to raise funds and awareness for Autism.
Beginning in Hothouse, N.C., Sexton will ruck a marathon each day, carrying a 25-pound slam ball he has affectionately named Slappy. Slappy represents the challenges individuals and their families living with autism face every day.
Sexton and Slappy will run across North Carolina and down the coast to finish the 750-mile run on May 26 in Surfside, S.C. – the first Autism Friendly Travel Destination.
Every step Sexton and Slappy take and every dollar raised goes to support people and families with autism and the work of Champion Autism Network (CAN), whose vision is to create and ensure autism aware and inclusive communities where all people CAN live, work, and play.
Sexton and CAN are working to raise $50,000 by May 28. Donations motivate Sexton to carry out his mission and funds will help CAN in a number of ways, including:
- Launching a job-matching program to place 25 young adults with autism with local employers
- Organizing 10 recreational activities a month to serve 200+ families in the Myrtle Beach area
- Connecting 4,000 families with 200 CAN-certified autism-friendly businesses for events and discounts
