Retailer Walker Furniture has resumed its “Project Firehouse: Rested & Ready” program, which was suddenly stopped in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 shutdown. After a year’s delay, first responders at Firehouse Station 21 received seven new mattresses, box springs and protectors on April 14.
“For Walker, our ‘Rested & Ready’ project is a community approach,” said Linda Alterwitz-Mizrahi, Walker Furniture co-owner, who attends every delivery. “Providing mattresses for our hardworking firefighters, who are on constant call every day of the year, is our way of showing appreciation for all they do.”
Firefighters are always excited about receiving new mattresses. They have the old ones stacked and ready to go when the Walker Furniture truck arrives with new ones. Firefighters gleefully grab the new mattresses and set them up.
“For these first responders, their job is not nine-to-five,” said Fire Chief John Steinbeck. “Firefighters have to be ready to respond. Imagine every night at any given minute when you’re going to sleep, you need to abruptly wake up, run your fastest and perform your best. Rest is so important to their health and wellbeing.”
