The Upstate New York-based Metro Mattress chain of bedding stores has become the world’s largest retailer of Spring Air International’s Chattam & Wells brand. Working together on merchandising and strategy, the manufacturer and retailer partnership has fully leveraged consumer preference during the pandemic to upgrade their living spaces and bedrooms with higher quality products.
“Metro Mattress is particularly skilled in merchandising brands that resonate with both its customer base and its retail sales associates, and it has used this strength to become our largest Chattam & Wells retailer,” said Nick Bates, president of Spring Air International. “At a time when consumers aren’t able to travel, go on vacation and are spending more time in their homes, we are seeing a greater need and want for better sleep.
“Chattam & Wells is ideally positioned to take advantage of this trend,” he added. “The brand is uncompromising in every sense, which is a key element that Metro Mattress’s retail sales associates can utilize during the sales process with their high-end customer base.”
“To sell a high-end brand, you have to have a great story to back it up, and Chattam & Wells has that story,” said Bill Spudis Jr., president and chief executive officer of Metro Mattress. “Spring Air introduced Chattam & Wells as a luxury mattress brand in 1996, and everything about it is authentic.
“Its story has always revolved around the authenticity and quality of the components, including ultra-high-density foams, high-end latexes, heavy duty wire and natural materials such as wools,” Spudis added. “Made in the USA by skilled craftspeople who are passionate about creating a mattress that provides the foundation for a healthy life, the line is far from a commodity. Custom-made with tangible differences that our sales associates can truly get behind, the brand really sells itself.”
The Metro Mattress chain now numbers 47 stores, stretching across upper New York State from Albany to Buffalo. The retailer has carried Chattam & Wells products for many years, but since taking the helm in January 2020, Spudis has broadened its offerings of the brand, and it is now the exclusive retailer for the line in the markets it serves. It also carries models under the Spring Air and Spring Air Back Supporter brands.
“We’ve really established a competitive advantage in our markets with Chattam & Wells,” Spudis said. “The brand gives us, as a premium retailer, an opportunity to not only reach the luxury demographic with a compelling story, but back it up with top quality and customer service. Last year, as we reopened from the pandemic, we experienced tremendous demand – and Spring Air never missed a beat.”
The Chattam & Wells Classic Collection is available in four different feels including extra firm, firm, pillow top and a luxury cushion firm. Hand-crafted in the U.S., each mattress features hand-tufting and luxury materials including 100 percent natural Talalay latex, high-resiliency foam – which is often used in luxury brands in the car industry – and fabric-encased, heavy gauge pocketed coils. Four-way stretch knit fabric with Tencel, and ecofriendly Joma wool designed for superior moisture control and breathability, keeps the mattress at the ideal sleeping temperature.
