Former Martin Roberts Design Director Launches New Retail Design Firm

Designer and architect Jennifer Magee, who worked for over 13 years with the late retail design veteran Martin Roberts, has now launched her own retail design firm Retail in the City, providing the same quality retail design services to the home furnishings industry.

Magee first started working as a senior design associate with Roberts in 2007 when he and two other partners were running the retail design firm Grid2 that serviced multiple retail channels, including fashion, drug and bookstores and whose top-tier client list included Tumi, Saks Off Fifth, Cartier and more. After Grid2 closed its doors in 2009, Magee then joined Roberts as his senior design director when he opened Martin Roberts Design in 2010. Together, they designed over 2.5 million sq. ft. of furniture store space and serviced hundreds of clients in the industry, including well-known retailers such as Furniture Mall of Kansas, Tepperman’s, Kloss Furniture, Johnny Janosik, and Serta.

Magee plans to honor Roberts’ legacy by continuing to provide quality and innovative design solutions for the furniture and bedding industry and the clients they have built relationships with over the years. She is applying her unique retail expertise to this latest venture and has brought with her the interior designers, graphic designers and renderers from her team at Martin Roberts Design.

“The furniture and bedding industry has been a major focus of my design work and interest for many years now, and I am incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to work so closely with Martin Roberts on so many retail projects and learn directly from him,” said Magee.  “Our team has also been working virtually for over 10 years now, so we are well-practiced in the art of virtual collaboration and working with clients remotely, even before the current covid restrictions came into place.”
